What do you think of the name Clementine? (Pronounced "Tyne" and nicknamed Emmie).

I should clarify I have always adored the name Clementine and would aim to use it in full. However I am conscious it is a long name and may get nicknamed, I don't love Clem or Clemmie and thought Emmie was a cute alternative. Thank you for your comments,

I think it sounds like a fruit.

I love Clementine, very pretty and timeless. Agree that would more likely be called Clem or Clemmie as nn by friends though (which I also quite like)

Mrsknackered · 11/02/2017 14:24

I've always preferred Clementina.
But I'm sure she'll be Clem or Clemmie.
I know a fair few Clementine's, all are Clem's.
Also know a Clement!

MrsMeeseeks · 11/02/2017 14:42

If you don't like Clem or Clemmie, would it be wise to choose Clementine?

Hulababy · 11/02/2017 14:47

I teach two little Clementines (actually in same class) - one is always called Clementine, the other Clem.

diamondsforapril · 11/02/2017 14:48

It is a fruit, isn't it?

harrietm87 · 11/02/2017 18:42

Clementine is lovely. Agree clemmie not a great nickname- sounds a bit like clammy to me. But unfortunately I think it's what most people would default to. What about Celeste/Celestine/Caroline/Emmeline/Evangeline/Madeline/Adeline as other options?

user1486384482 · 13/02/2017 13:21

Thank you everyone. It's the only name my husband and I can agree on so it's still top contender, even though I don't love the nicknames. If we do go ahead with Clementine I hope she will be called her fullname or occasionally Emmie / Emmy!

stoopido · 14/02/2017 21:14

Like the name but Emmie doesn't go as a nickname?!

BridgetDarcy · 15/02/2017 07:33

I know a Clementine - pronounced teen though. I think that's much nicer than tyne.

I don't get the Emmie shortening.

My Clementine is Clem or Clemmie. I think Emmie is a different name entirely. Maybe a short option for Emmeline.

user1486384482 · 15/02/2017 10:23

Thank you for your comments!"Clemmie>Emmie" that's where Emmie is from. From the research I have done some do nickname their Clementine's "Emmie/Emmy". If we do go ahead it will be pronounced "Tyne". Other names on our list are too popular right now.

I absolutely love it. It's a great name and was on my list before being vetoed by dh. The only thing is you won't be able to control what other people call her (at school etc). I am a terrible and notorious name shortener, I can't help it! I manage to make the nicest long names into a one or two syllabler, so if I was her teacher I would almost def call her Clem or Clemmie unless you directly told me not to! I love them all though, clementine, Clem or clemmie.

SuperBeagle · 15/02/2017 10:51

How do you feel about Emmeline, OP? It's similar in style to Clementine but will lend itself to Emmie as a nickname.

reuset · 16/02/2017 00:57

I know a Clementine - pronounced teen though. I think that's much nicer than tyne.

This isn't aimed at you, author of this post, I'm just using your comment. One of my pet peeves is people who say we pronounce it 'teen' like the French (so clemen-teen). Don't think so, 'the French' pronounce Clémentine as cleh-mon-teen. At least clemen-tyne doesn't pretend anything.

oliversmummy26 · 17/02/2017 12:06

I love the name Clementine and it will be on our list for definite. We would also pronounce it "tyne", the only thing I worry about Clemmie is that it's too similar to "clammy" and I worry children would be mean...I think Emmie works though, and totally get where you're coming from! I might steal your idea OP! Smile

user1486384482 · 19/02/2017 13:21

I completely agree with the below, as I am not French I pronounce it "tyne" and personally find this pronunciation much prettier in English.

Thank you everyone! My husband loves the name Clementine more than I do but I think we're going to go ahead and use it as we can't agree on any other names and find faults with all.

MikeUniformMike · 19/02/2017 14:35

Clementine is lovely and Emmie as a shortened form is terrific.
Please don't call her Emily or Emilia. Emily was so overdone that it seems that all shop assistants under 25 are called it, apart from the lads.

It's def. pronounced Clementyne not Clementeen.

llangennith · 19/02/2017 14:42

Love the name but the Clementines I know are known as Clemmy or Clem.
