Scottish girl names

Hey,

30 weeks and struggling to find a Scottish girls name. Can anyone help??

Lots of names have been taken as we know babies/ friends/ family members with these names. We would also like a name that can be shortened if possible.

Names that we ideally need/ want to avoid:
Ailsa
Heather
Iona
Sheena
Shona
Mairi

Can anyone think of any others?

Thanks!!! X

I have an Elspeth who we call Effie sometimes.

Ishbel

Piffpaffpoff · 05/02/2017 21:11

My favourites are

Morven
Lorna
Isla
Ishbel

There are hunners of Isla's, Eilidh's and Katie's at the DCs primary school at the moment (not literally hunners, but lots and lots)

I wouldn't trust many baby name websites - especially the one mentioned upthread, which has mistakes. For instance, the Scottish Gaelic spelling of Beatrice (it's the same name, just spelled using Gaelic spelling conventions) is not Beitiris as that website says but Beitris.

This, to my mind, raises a big question: does spelling an 'international' name such as Beatrice in a Scottish Gaelic way make it Scottish? Or does the name stay international? The same applies to Scottish Gaelic versions of other names well-known in other parts of Europe, such as Eilidh (= Helen) and Marsaili (= Marjorie, which is in turn a version of Margaret.)

It depends on how you define 'Scottish', I suppose. Scottish origin or Scottish usage? Or both? And traditional name usage or modern ? IIRC, Jack and Olivia topped the Scottish baby name charts in 2016. Am not laying down any rules, just asking a question.

Marie
Fiona
Kirsten
Shona

Agree Isla is very common at the moment.

Goldnick · 05/02/2017 21:38

Florascotianew - although Marsaili is taken as Marjorie, it's an older name, probably more akin to Marcella, rooted from Mars.

You make good points!

TBH we struggled as we wanted a name that was Scottish but not Gaelic. Luckily ds was a ds.

A word of warming if you go for Eilidh and leave Scotland your DD will forever be spelling her name or being called hayley, or sometimes even eyelid Grin

Maisie
Eilish
Kitty (I know it's more a shorting of a traditional name, but still been used in its own right for many years!)

I really like Bonnie. We will be sticking with Scottish names too when we have ours.
