We are from Arizona.

Love both Isabelle and Katelynn Smile

Which do you prefer?

I hate Katelynn but love Caitlin even though I pronounce them pretty much the same Grin

happymumof4crazykids · 07/02/2017 16:40

Isabelle is much nicer :)

AuntieMay · 07/02/2017 16:46

I would pronounce Katelynn the same as Caitlin as as I have a 15 yr old Caitlin - I'm pretty confident!

AmazingBobby · 07/02/2017 17:38

Auntie not to be rude, but just because you have a Caitlin and pronounce it Katelynn doesn't mean that's how it's supposed to be pronounced. I know lots of Leilas pronounced 'incorrectly' and Ciaras too.

SquedgieBeckenheim · 07/02/2017 17:43

I pronounce Caitlin as Kate-lynn, although I know technically the correct pronunciation is more like Kot-leen. I hate all these alternative spellings for Caitlin.
I prefer the spelling of Isobel to Isabelle. Isabelle just reminds me of my dad taking the piss by saying "is a bell necessary on a bicycle"
Out of the 2 I prefer Caitlin.

I'm a bit lost. Have 2 daughters - both of whom have been friends with a Caitlin. Everyone (including the girls) has pronounced their names as Kate - Lin. Can someone please explain how Kate Lynn could be pronounced any differently (it's relatively popular here in England, as is Isabelle) Hmm

Prefer the traditional spelling of Isobel though.

Loyly · 07/02/2017 17:51

Isabelle

SquedgieBeckenheim · 07/02/2017 17:54

namechanged Caitlin is traditionally the Gaelic version of Kathleen. It has been Anglicised a lot to be pronounced Kate-lyn.

kilmuir · 07/02/2017 17:59

I was going to say Katelynn sounds like a horrid made up name from Trumpland

BackforGood · 07/02/2017 18:02

KateLynn is awful - to my English eyes, but that is how I would pronounce Caitlin, which I do like. Maybe it's different in Arizona Smile

Ever 3rd child of Nursery age around here is called some variation on Isabelle (many, different spellings) so I wouldn't go for that at the moment, but really do like Caitlin.

Kazzawazza69 · 07/02/2017 21:49

Isabelle is lovely as is Kaitlyn (my preferred spelling). I don't like the Katelynn spelling.

A bit confused about the pronounciation of Caitlin - I thought it was just an alternative spelling of Kaitlyn/Kaitlin/Katelyn etc ??

Marcipex · 07/02/2017 22:34

Isabelle or Isabel.

Lovely name, popular for a reason.

badtime · 08/02/2017 10:37

I am Irish and I actually prefer people who are going to use the 'kate-lin' pronunciation to use alternative spellings, as they are not pronouncing Caitlin as it should be pronounced anyway.

(Confused posters - Caitlin is an Irish name and is pronounced according to the rules of Irish pronunciation. There are regional variations, but it is pronounced more like Catch-leen, Cotch-leen, Cawtch-leen etc. The traditional English variation is Catlin or Catelin (pronounced as Catlin is spelled). Both Caitlin and Catlin are versions of the medieval French name Cateline or the Spanish Catalina).

SuperBeagle · 08/02/2017 11:25

I like Katelyn as I think Kate is a very sweet nickname, but I think it only needs one n on the end.

Pipilangstrumpf · 08/02/2017 15:17

I agree - Katelyn is nice and can be shortened easily to Kate.

RedSauce · 08/02/2017 15:44

I would pronounce Katelynn and Caitlin the same, and I'm from SE England. I don't mind Caitlin but Katelynn just looks like two names stuck together.

Either way, I prefer Isabelle.

Bringbacksummer · 08/02/2017 19:22

Isabelle

mathanxiety · 09/02/2017 00:11

Really dislike the Caitlin/Katelyn pronunciation (something like Kat-eh-lynn)

Hmm Katelynn, Katelyn and Caitlin (and variants like Caitlyn, Caitlynn, Kaitlyn and Kaitlynn) are pronounced exactly the same in the US and everywhere else. I have never come across the Kat-eh-lynn pronunciation. Namechanged is right.

The Irish name Cáitlín otoh, complete with fadas, is pronounced Cautch-leen.

I dislike them all, including Cáitlín. If I were choosing any name in this family I would choose the good old-fashioned, anglicised Kathleen.

I would go with Isabelle, but I prefer the spelling Isobel. Or Isabella.

MollyHuaCha · 09/02/2017 08:37

Isabella is lovely
