I agree it looks & sounds quite pretty, but are you aware that mara is the name for a large South American rodent that's a bit like a giant guinea pig? They are quite cute creatures, though.

It might not bother you at all, but just thought I'd point it out in case you didn't know.

TyneTeas · 30/01/2017 00:18

The Mara was also a thing on Doctor Who

en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mara_(Doctor_Who)

MinnowAndTheBear · 30/01/2017 00:20

I quite like it, but I do know that it means "bitter". It's a fairly unusual name from the Book of Ruth so I'd guess that you were religious.

tooclosetocall · 30/01/2017 00:22

Pretty, I like it.
I don't know the association with the Dr Who thing or the South American type guinea pig though.
I think you'd be safe using it.

mineallmine · 30/01/2017 00:23

I like it. In Irish it's a derivative of the word for the sea. It's lovely.

OrangeJulius · 30/01/2017 00:31

Giant adorable rodent. I like it.

mammmamia · 30/01/2017 00:42

I think of the Masai Mara in Africa.
How about Amara, pretty name.

Manumission · 30/01/2017 00:44

Lovely. Makes me think of Mara Wilson the child actress.

HubrisComicGhoul · 30/01/2017 00:53

I have a Mara, so obviously I love the name Grin She loves it too and it really does suit her.

MrsPeelyWally · 30/01/2017 01:05

Mara is an everyday name where I live. I can count 3 within our family friendship group. Its a lovely name.

Mara means joy in Arabic and can be a unisex name

But its also part of my mothers name in the Irish form mentioned by 'mineallmine'.

Ive been to the Masai Mara and have never thought of it in association with the name.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 30/01/2017 02:40

Mara Hynes just rolls off your tongue.
The little girl, who played Matilda her real name is Mara. Well she wouldn't be so little now,:would she

Joinourclub · 30/01/2017 02:43

Mara is cute. I like Tamara too.

chipsnmayo · 30/01/2017 04:48

What about Amara?

Mara just doesn't look finished to me.

sofato5miles · 30/01/2017 05:38

We call the Masai Mara, the Mara. I like it for that.

My DS has a friend called Amara, lovely too.

MiriAmmerman · 30/01/2017 10:35

Beautiful and unusual.
The meaning wouldn't put me off. Yes, it means bitterness, but so do Mary, Marie, Maria, Miriam etc, because they all have a common root. Can't imagine that it bothers the owners of any of those names.

ItchyFoot · 30/01/2017 10:38

I love Mara. Wanted it for dd1. She'd have been named after Mara of the Acoma

AlwaysTheWinner · 30/01/2017 10:41

I love it. It means 'sea' in Scottish Gaelic too, I think. It's one of my favourite girl's names.

FurbysMakeSexNoises · 30/01/2017 10:41

Like it, unusual but not freaky

Sugarpiehoneyeye · 30/01/2017 17:29

Prefer Amara.

Jojo13 · 30/01/2017 19:40

I love it, it's top of my list if bump is a girl in a few weeks. I have been watching this forum closely to see if anyone else bought it up and you're the first I've seen.
Short, simple, easy to say/spell, not very common. Certainly ticks all my boxes!

RJnomore1 · 30/01/2017 19:41

I love it, it means the sea for me and if I had a third girl it would be up there for consideration.

HelenDenver · 30/01/2017 19:42

Nice name!

ChuffChu · 30/01/2017 19:44

I love it too!

Also for Mara of the Acoma reasons.

May your dd play the great game well Grin

Jooni · 30/01/2017 20:56

Mara is lovely. Simple but strong and pretty.

spankhurst · 30/01/2017 20:59

I like it, Mara Kay is one of my favourite authors.
