Was my lovely mum's name and would love to use it but wonder if it is too marmite a name? Any thoughts?

It doesn't matter what we think. If its to honor your lovely mum. I think you should definitely use it.
For the record. I think the idea of a baby Sheila sounds really cute.

PuppyMonkey · 28/01/2017 14:56

I'm not sure we're ready for a Sheila comeback yet tbh - no offence to your lovely mum. Maybe use it as a middle name?

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 28/01/2017 14:56

Too old fashioned.

What was her middle name? That any less old fashioned?

SpongebobRoundPants · 28/01/2017 14:58

I think it would be nice as a middle name.

Governorgeek · 28/01/2017 14:58

I'm sorry but I think it's an absolutely dreadful name for a baby..

octonuddle · 28/01/2017 15:00

Well her middle name is my first name and I didn't really want to name DD the same as me otherwise that would have been a good compromise Throughthickandthin01
Am so undecided! One day I can totally see it, the next I bottle it Grin

A tiny number of babies registered named Sheila each year. I don't know if it's ready for mainstream comeback, it's not high fashion at the moment, but it's not a bad name by any means and is your choice, ultimately.

reuset · 28/01/2017 15:03

Is Celia too different? Sheila is the Irish version, apparently, in a roundabout way anyway.

MrsVioletBottom · 28/01/2017 15:03

I think if you like it, then use it. Baby Sheila sounds really sweet.

My mother was named Hilda, wish I had used it, but was put off by other people at the time.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 28/01/2017 15:04

Do you want a name where there's 6 in each class. like Evie or Lily-Mae.
Isn't it better to stand out.

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 28/01/2017 15:05

What about Lia or Leia as they come from letters in Sheila.

HardcoreLadyType · 28/01/2017 15:05

I dislike it, but then, I'm Australian. It sounds horrible in an Australian accent and is, of course, slang for "female people".

None of that is likely to apply to you. Your associations of it are with your lovely mum. So, it really doesn't matter what I think.

So, if you like it, go for it!

melonribena · 28/01/2017 15:06

I like Sheila. I think it sounds lovely when you say it and has similar sounds to the fashion now.
Ds1 is naked after relatives. I think of them fondly when I say his name

melonribena · 28/01/2017 15:07

*ha ha ha!! named

LoveMyLittleSuperhero · 28/01/2017 15:07

Beautiful, different, who cares if it old fashioned? What a lovely way to honour your mom Smile

pilates · 28/01/2017 15:11

Middle name, but not a first name

GinIsIn · 28/01/2017 15:13

Maybe you could use it as a middle name?

Misssss · 28/01/2017 15:13

My mother is Sheila too. I'm definitely going to use it. It's a beautiful name

Pipilangstrumpf · 28/01/2017 16:29

Why are people advising against a perfectly nice and normal name (that has huge significance to the op) simply because it's not fashionable HmmShock

Pipilangstrumpf · 28/01/2017 16:30

Sheila is a lovely name and makes a refreshing change from all the little Evies and Ellies etc

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 28/01/2017 16:33

Maybe because that's what the op asked Pip Confused

reuset · 28/01/2017 16:36

The OP asked for our thoughts, that's usually how this, and other sections on Mumsnet, work. Bit pointless otherwise Wink

Emmageddon · 28/01/2017 16:37

I love the name Sheila, it's very pretty.

Ilovecaindingle · 28/01/2017 16:39

What about Shay instead?

missyB1 · 28/01/2017 16:43

Very cute name, and not too popular, definitely use it! There are so many "fashionable" names that are over used now and its getting boring!
