Is Dylan really a 'naughty boy name'?

Hi,

Had our son last week, decided on Dylan, had a quick Google and came across a couple of threads on here; had a read and some describe it as a 'naughty boy name'? Will his teachers really judge him? Sad if so, we will go with our 2nd choice.

TIA

The name Dillon comes from the Irish origin. In Irish The meaning of the name Dillon is: Like a son. From an Irish surname derived from the Old German first name Dillo. Also used as a variant spelling of Dylan, meaning 'Like a lion.

It's not creative, it's just a different name.

Not at all, know one really sweet and well behaved! Dennis would make me think of that but not Dylan

Latetotheparty26 · 26/01/2017 20:30

It's a lovely name! Irish and Welsh but in Wales we pronounce it "Dul-lan" rather than Dillon.

amelie427 · 26/01/2017 20:36

My step son is a Dylan and he's as good as gold.

Joeybee · 26/01/2017 21:07

I do associate Dylan with a bit of a naughty child...but probably just because it's a fairly popular name, so odds are you're more likely to come across that name on a naughty child. If I liked Dylan, it wouldn't put me off using it, I'm sure your Dylan would be fine.

MiniMaxi · 26/01/2017 21:16

Dylan was on our shortlist and I think it's a great name - seems cool surfer dude to me rather than naughty

Bubspub · 26/01/2017 21:19

No it's not. I know one and he's an angel. On the other hand, my DS has a name I don't think is associated with naughty boys and he's a terror! So ignore silly things said on here, just go with a name you like x X

Kennington · 26/01/2017 21:24

If poet names are now equated with being naughty I really wouldn't know how to choose a name.
I wouldn't worry.
There are daft names misspelled or weird appropriations of words but Dylan isn't one of them.

OneOfTheGrundys · 26/01/2017 21:26

I'm a teacher. The only Dylan's I've ever taught have been very well behaved. Not that that means a thing of course!

OneOfTheGrundys · 26/01/2017 21:27

Ugh, Dylans.

thebakerwithboobs · 26/01/2017 21:28

The 'naughtiest' (I hate that word-bad behaviour is always a symptom of a cause but that's a different thread!!) boy I've ever taught was called Hugo!

doggle · 26/01/2017 21:29

I have only known one and he taught my 7 yo how to access some crappy computer game where the characters said 'fuck' 'oh fuck' a lot. He was 7 himself, and this was in a public library during a kids computer session lol.

I'm not sure it's enough to revile the name forever, but I did laugh at the premise.

goldenrachita · 27/01/2017 09:45

It's a nice name and the reason it is seen that way is because people see it as a working class name like Jayden or Kyle, as a previous poster said. That doesn't mean your child will be naughty. Pick the name you love!

squoosh · 27/01/2017 11:37

By 'naughty boy name', a certain subset of Mn seems to mean 'any name we associate with the working classes and/or Irish boys' names

Spot on.

I'd love to know what names the teachers of Charterhouse and Winchester would deem a 'naughty boy's name'. Would those names then be off limits for certain MN snobs? I doubt it.

squoosh · 27/01/2017 11:43

For all we know Ruperts might be famed for setting fire to cricket pavilions. Wink

mum2bejen · 27/01/2017 15:27

I have only ever met lovely boys named Dylan so I associate good things with the name :-)

I have also met a really awful Cameron, so I am totally put off that name purely because it makes me think of him!

MrsMeeseeks · 27/01/2017 15:30

Congratulations! I think Dylan is a lovely name.

Kieran and Riley are the naughty boy names in my experience.

tarheelbaby · 27/01/2017 15:43

There's a Dylan in DD's class. He's a lovely, sensitive, if chatty (according to dd) boy.
I live near Winchester and teach in a private school (but a famous one). IME over the years, children called Alex in all forms, long or short, male or female, are hard work and their parents are too.

Willialwaysbelookeddownon · 27/01/2017 15:44

No, it's just a name. I wouldn't associate it as 'naughty' but that's people's disguise for lower class on here.
I do know some right whingey Dylan's though but a lovely grown up Dylan too.

Mummamayhem · 27/01/2017 15:46

I think it's a lovely name, does it get shortened at all?
