Jakub or Kacper? Maybe Olaf?

I know a few Olafs (in Poland) and it's my favourite, but it won't work in the UK, will it? Frozen...

If not, it's between Jakub and Kacper.

Which do you like more? Thanks.

I do not associate Olaf with Frozen at all. It's such a traditional name that it goes far beyond it. I associate it with big strong men, so definitely a good name in my opinion Smile

goldenrachita · 26/01/2017 10:29

If Olaf is your favourite, just use it. There are plenty of little girls who were called Elsa before Frozen came out as it was already a trendy name, and they are all fine! Olaf is easy to write and say for English speakers.

Kacper is a bit awkward for English speakers to say, with clashing consonants in the middle, so I wouldn't say I'm a huge fan. People might end up calling him Casper a lot, out of laziness or habit, so you'd need to be sure that didn't bother you.

Jacub is nice. The spelling is not English but the name is easy for us to say. Noone will find it difficult to say Ya-cob. I know a little Jacub who's always called Kuba- which is a nice abbreviation that I think they also use in Poland?

And I think you should use the Polish spelling, whatever you choose.

minipie · 26/01/2017 10:32

I think Olaf will be fine. Frozen fever is wearing off already and by the time your DS is pre school age it will be just another Disney film. Anyway it's not a terrible association.

Jakub is nice and I think people could manage the spelling/pronunciation fine once taught. I would avoid Kacper for all the reasons given.

Sugarpiehoneyeye · 26/01/2017 10:40

Olaf is a great name OP. 😄

EssentialHummus · 26/01/2017 10:44

I like Kacper, but I'd expect it to be pronounced Casper/Caspar everywhere he goes. I also prefer the Olav spelling to Olaf, bit it sounds like that isn't on the cards.

MitzyLeFrouf · 26/01/2017 10:52

Just call him Olaf. Does the Frozen thing really matter? Would probably be a positive association for a young child and by the time he’s older Frozen will be ten Disney cartoons ago.

MossytheMouse · 26/01/2017 10:54

I think you should go with olaf

greeeen · 26/01/2017 10:56

Jakub is my favourite.

llangennith · 26/01/2017 11:01

As your child will be living and going to school in the UK do him a favour and don't give him a name that will cause him problems throughout his life. If you like the name Jakub/Kacper would it really be so awful to spell it the way it's normally spelled in your adoptive country?

MitzyLeFrouf · 26/01/2017 11:03

I think people would be able to cope with non UK spellings.

AntiQuitty · 26/01/2017 11:19

There's a Kacper in ds's class and yes they all just say Casper so if that pronunciation is okay with you?

ShoutOutToMyEx · 26/01/2017 12:06

All of those names are so harsh sounding and not nice to say

Sometimes I read things on here and I roll my eyes so hard I think I'm going to permanently damage them.

I like Jakub the best OP. DP is from another E.European country so we're looking for names that work both there and the UK, it's tricky!

Jooni · 26/01/2017 13:15

Jakub and Kacper are my favourites. Kacper is very popular in the Polish community and I think it's perfectly possible for English speakers to pronounce. It's said like "CATS-per".

Jakub is lovely and the pronunciation is very easy, plus I love Kuba!

I don't think Olaf will work here I'm afraid OP...

Jooni · 26/01/2017 13:16

Oliwier?

Valeriemalorie · 26/01/2017 13:19

I think Olaf is nice. I also know a Jakub, known as Kuba. If you like Olaf, go for it!

Yoarchie · 26/01/2017 13:21

Unfortunately Jakub looks like a misspelling of Jacob. When I typed it, my autocorrect even wanted to change it to Jacob. I would avoid names that are prone to spelling difficulties personally.

My dd has a friend who has a name that is hard to pronounce and hard to spell. The child (aged 7) has come up with an short and snappy alternative and now all her friends (and the teacher!) call her this alternative name. I don't know how her parents feel about it but the child is clearly sick of the difficult name.

TheCakes · 26/01/2017 13:21

I like Jakub. It's a lovely name.
DS has a Polish Jakub in his class known as Kuba.

Sophronia · 26/01/2017 13:32

Jakub

Trollspoopglitter · 26/01/2017 13:35

Not sure why the polish spelling is that vital if you're not in Poland - won't it be clear from his surname he's polish?

Kacper is the Polish form of the name Casper, which is Persian

CancellyMcChequeface · 26/01/2017 13:37

Jakub! I also love the nickname Kuba. Smile

Josie1988 · 26/01/2017 13:39

Some of these comments are a bit Confused most Polish names will be 'difficult' as they all pretty much have a different pronunciation. So I'm supposed to think about his teacher and about the country he's living in. I'm sorry but for the sake of keeping his heritage, I don't 'feel sorry' for the teacher who has to ask him how it's said Hmm how do you think they cope with the already Polish, Asian, etc. Children's names?? We are in London, English ('easy') names are in the minority in a lot of the local primaries.

Jakub and Olaf are great names. I have a friend married to a very nice Olaf nn Ol or Olly.

PostTruthEra · 26/01/2017 13:42

No help, but I like both Jakub and Kacper. Nice sounding names.

Good luck with the baby, OP.Smile

LawrenceSMarlow · 26/01/2017 13:45

Some of you guys...you know this casual bigotry is not OK, right?

reallyanotherone · 26/01/2017 13:52

Anyone who refuses to hear how a name is pronounced and use it correctly needs to open their narrow mind.

I also live in london and it is perfectly possible for people of any nationality to pronounce english, african, polish, indian, caribbean, chinese or any other name correctly, without mocking or anglicising. Or near enough, i have to admit i am not very good at replicating some chinese sounds!

Even teachers can ask a child how their name is pronounced, and use the correct spelling and pronunciation thereafter.

O/p, i like jakub best. I also like Marcin :)
