"Royal" name and surname?

Have NCed for this as v identifying.

What would you think of a name which has (historical) royal connections?

E.g.
Catherine Howard
Jane Grey
Henry Tudor?

We love the name concerned but would it just be too cheesy to have the name of a former king or queen?!

I know a Catherine Parr, though it's her married name. And a friend with the surname Oliver called her baby James last year!

Tracker4 · 24/01/2017 12:20

I think if you love the name then do it! Our name choice for a boy was Cameron David then our surname! Irregardless of the previous pm if my dd had been a boy that would have been his name! Not quite the same as what you're suggesting but if you like a name then do it! And when they're studying this particular topic at primary school I reckon their mates would find it quite cool. Unless however you're planning to name them after a tyrant or a dictator in which case I'd say maybe not!

Is it Cnut? Because if so, I would rethink for other reasons.

If the original person with your name is in the family tree then do it! Great talking point.

Manumission · 24/01/2017 15:52

Ah Somerville you're a treasure Grin

Somerville · 24/01/2017 16:18

Well how cool would it be to be named Jane Grey and have people constantly go "like the nine day Queen!" and be able to say casually; "yes, I'm a descendant; she's a 14 times great aunt."

Manumission · 24/01/2017 16:23

Cool, but probably not likely to be the situation Smile

It didn't do (actress) Jane Seymour any harm.

Her real name is Joyce Frankenberg - not quite so catchy Smile

Jiffybag · 24/01/2017 17:01

OK it's one of Henry VIII's wives.

I can't say which exact one.

OK -- or not?!

Depends on who the historical personage is, I think, Manumission. If OP is considering Charle Magne it will work as everyone with a European ancestor somewhere in their family tree is a descendant of Charlemagne. But I'm guessing it's not that. Grin

Grey or Stuart there are millions of. But Boleyn and the like and you might find a distant connection.

Somerville · 24/01/2017 17:15

Hmm.

AB: No. such a distinctive surname.
CP or CH: If you're going to nn to Kate or Cathy or whatever then it's fine, IMO. They're lesser known wives with more common surnames. You could always use the Kathryn spelling, too.
JS: No, but more because of the actress.

(I'm discounting possibility that surname is Ofaragon or Ofcleeves.)

Jiffybag · 24/01/2017 17:17

Thanks Somerville.

I think the potential for naffness is too great.

Yes.

Ha! Knew it!

Manumission come eat your words! Grin Grin

Do it, Jiffy! Do it!

Disclaimer: My DC have names that MNers usually refer to as 'too try-hard' so I should not be listened to on baby names!

Manumission · 24/01/2017 17:23

I think it does make a difference to how usable it is too Howard, Seymour and Parr are all commonplace enough to probably allow it to work without being glaring.

Two of those were not beheaded, which would also be better scenario than sharing a name with an executed person, i would think.

Manumission · 24/01/2017 17:24

Ha Grin I just deal with likelihoods Somer Smile
