Isobel or Madeleine?

Firsttimemama2017 · 14/01/2017 19:28

Baby girl due next week and we can't decide on Isobel or Madeleine!

Love the nicknames for both names but think I slightly prefer Maddie to Izzy...

Opinions?

I'm not bothered about popularity as have a very common 80s baby name myself and it's never done me any harm 😊

Isobel

Madeleine

ForalltheSaints · 17/01/2017 07:01

Isabel

Madeleine will sadly immediately make people think of Madeleine McCann.

Madeleine will sadly immediately make people think of Madeleine McCann.

You can't just not use a name for that reason... Hmm

Plus, it won't necessarily. Most people will know a Madeleine outside of Madeleine McCann, and that's the first person that'll come to mind.

EliCon · 17/01/2017 14:20

I find both of them beautiful, although Madeleine slightly more :P

winkygirl · 19/01/2017 19:37

I have a Madeleine. She was born one hear before Madeleine McCann disappeared. Only once (when I have said what my children's names are) has someone mentioned Madeleine McCann.

Coincidentally enough my DH liked Isabella. Both are beautiful names. And both are names with different spellings/shortenings with different spellings.

Madeleine, Madelaine, Madeline
Maddie, Maddy, Maddi

mikado1 · 19/01/2017 19:46

Really like both but Madeleine is my favourite. Strongly dislike nicknames given for both, though I like Belle/Bella. 'Maddie' reduces such a beautiful name to a very harsh sound imo.

FrozeninSummer · 20/01/2017 02:41

Isobel - but only if spelt that way and not abbreviated to Izzy. Madeleine very pretty too though,

HeadlessGummyBears · 20/01/2017 15:16

They're both equally lovely, but would go for Madeleine as Isobel is very popular these days.

Dinnerout1 · 20/01/2017 15:24

Isabella is a beautiful name I think Isobel is more common now. X

Politix · 20/01/2017 15:35

Either, maybe Madeleine. (Sp?) but both lovely

Politix · 20/01/2017 15:37

You've no control over how the names will be shortened once they are older Sad. One of my DDs has a similar name which has ended up being shortened to a much less 'pretty' NN

Pipilangstrumpf · 20/01/2017 15:57

I prefer Isabel

stevie69 · 20/01/2017 16:25

I MUCH prefer Isobel.

Velvian · 20/01/2017 16:26

Isobel; you can shorten to Belle or Bella.

TheNaze73 · 20/01/2017 16:28

Madeleine is my cousins daughters name & she gets it shortened to Mads.

There are 5 of them in her year at school so I think it must be quite popular.

Both lovely names

PuppyMonkey · 20/01/2017 16:32

I vote Madeleine - my DD's name. She's 20 now and people very rarely think of Madeleine McCann when they meet her. Confused

AugustRose · 20/01/2017 16:39

Isobel

AreWeThereYet000 · 22/01/2017 18:56

I'm a Madeleine - the only thing that is annoying is having to spell it all the time most people think Madeline so I have to correct them - I use Maddie as my preferred name. Maddison is a lovely alternative too.

I have a friend whose daughter is Isobel and hates Izzy, if anyone calls her it both my friend and the child say no it's Isobel - I think belle would be a NN I would use x

Missyb15 · 22/01/2017 19:54

Madeleine. Would you pronounce it MadeLINE? i think it's lovely and a bit more unusual that isobel

Pluto30 · 22/01/2017 19:59

Madeleine is Mad-eh-LEN.

Madeline is Mad-eh-LINE (to rhyme with divine), like the Madeline in the Eve of St Agnes, and the little French girl from the books/movie.

llangennith · 22/01/2017 20:05

Both lovely. Prefer Madeline.

Canadalife · 22/01/2017 20:10

Congratulations! We've got a Madeleine and an Isabel, Maddy and Bel for short. I think that they're both gorgeous names! You have to see what the baby looks like once she's actually here though

Joeybee · 22/01/2017 23:00

Prefer Madeleine, and love Maddie as a nn. Only thing that bothers me (but this is probably just me!) is that some pronounce it 'Mad-e-lane' and some 'Mad-e-line' and that would irritate me. I imagine the child having to correct people all the time.

AreWeThereYet000 · 22/01/2017 23:40

Just to add I pronounce my name mad-a-lin
