Boy name Spike?

So we're having another boy. With DS1 I have exhausted all boy names that I really like - it's a rare but not a unusually-sounding name if that makes sense, and more commonly used as a surname.

DP suggests Spike, I laughed at first but it's kind of growing on me. What do you think?

Spike is Spike Milligan's nickname though, his given name is Terence.

I say keep it as a nickname, not their formal name.

mistermagpie · 11/01/2017 14:53

Don't name him Spike, he's not a pet. I hate this trend for names that are supposed to be 'cute' on a baby/toddler when they will have to grow up to be an adult, with a job and a passport and a bank account etc etc. I feel sorry for all these Teddy's and Spike's when they are 40 year-old accountants (or whatever) saddled with a silly name.

@TheLivingAsheth Typical lazy journalist. Wink

I wanted to be a journalist too, until I did a week's work experience on the illustrious (free) newspaper the Leicester Mail, and then decided I'd really rather not... I still harness my inner Lynda Day regularly though.

'Spike' Milligan was Terence Allan Milligan. Spike was his nickname. Spike is either a dog's name or a nickname. I rarely venture onto these baby name threads, but in this case I am seriously wondering about the sanity of the possible choice of baby name.

lorelairoryemily · 11/01/2017 14:58

Sorry but that's a terrible name!! 'Spike' will have to go for job interviews, apply for a mortgage and introduce himself to people, imagine if your teenage daughter told you her boyfriend was called that?! What would you imagine?!!!

EvansOvalPies · 11/01/2017 15:00

Good point, Lorelai - If my daughter brought a boyfriend home called Spike, I would chuckle and ask him what his real name was.

blueskyinmarch · 11/01/2017 15:02

I knew a Spike. His real name was Michael.

GinIsIn · 11/01/2017 15:02

Dog's name here too....

TheNaze73 · 11/01/2017 15:05

Love it.

Press Gang & Spike Lee spring to mind (real name Shelton) as well as Milligan.

Surreyblah · 11/01/2017 15:05

Ah dexter fletcher.

Fine as nickname, not as a given name!

WaitrosePigeon · 11/01/2017 15:06

Reminds me of that twat in Notting Hill, you know, the housemate?

Apart from that it is dreadful anyway.

tinymeteor · 11/01/2017 15:10

Nope, sorry.

Could call him Spencer and make Spike the nickname?

ImYourWomanJonSnow · 11/01/2017 15:14

tiny I considered that but DS1's first name is more commonly used as a surname so don't want to repeat. I really like Spencer though.

I have a Spike (he had spiky hair as a baby and the nickname stuck). He has a very normal actual name and answers to both.

I agree with pps that it isn't a forever name. Spencer has similar vibes but is a lot safer.

sycamore54321 · 11/01/2017 16:42

There's also the fact that spike as a noun isn't a particularly positive thing. Makes me think of pointy bits on wrought iron fences and the like. Please don't.

Sophronia · 11/01/2017 20:09

It's fine as a nickname, but I'd give him a proper name as well.

ImYourWomanJonSnow · 12/01/2017 11:50

OK thanks for drumming some sense into me everyone, I agree Spike is too much. Great nickname for those who can carry it off though.

So another option - Ivo. I'm from Eastern Europe and we would pronounce it Eevo, would it sound weird to English speakers? Or he could be Eyvo in the UK and Eevo when we visit my family?

KatherinaMinola · 12/01/2017 11:54

Another one who immediately thought Press Gang Grin.

Oddly, Spike Milligan didn't spring to mind, although I love his work. The young Dexter Fletcher though...

KatherinaMinola · 12/01/2017 11:55

There's another thread already running on Ivo! (Eevo for me.)

CatThiefKeith · 12/01/2017 11:59

bluesky I also knew a spike that was a Michael. Wonder if it the same one. Was he a doorman?

viques · 12/01/2017 12:00

I've just checked, and I can't find a single high court judge, hospital consultant, QC, high ranking armed forces person, senior police officer, headteacher, politician or journalist called Spike.

however, a quick check at Battersea ...............

ImYourWomanJonSnow · 12/01/2017 12:01

Thank you Katherina, I will head there.

I think of wrought iron gates too.

Blossomdeary · 12/01/2017 12:05

Oh please do not saddle your boy with this.
