Archer or Rufus?

Any opinions and which do you prefer, Archer or Rufus? Former is DH's great grandad's name, very Victorian sounding but I think it's quite cool. Latter is my old favourite, I think it's lovely, but have been slightly put off by dog comments and maybe it sounds a bit lispy...? What are you thoughts?

Our dog is called Rufus so I'd go with Archer.

If it helps, I regret naming my dog Archer as I'm now pregnant and wish I kept it for a son!

Brighteyes27 · 11/01/2017 21:45

Not keen on either to be fair, but maybe Archer has a slight edge.

Remember the child has to live with the name all their lives. I remember working with someone in my first job whose son had gained a place at a football academy and was crying the night before worried about what he would say when they asked his name as he didn't want everyone there laughing at him as well.

I really like Rufus. It's an underused Biblical name, quite cool and quirky, unusual without being unheard of.

Not so sure about Archer as I'm not so keen on occupation names, or first names which are often surnames.

Snifftest · 12/01/2017 01:41

I have a Rufus, so have to say that!

TheMortificadosDragon · 12/01/2017 08:00

Rufus is a Roman name, only 'biblical' insofar as Paul referred to one in a letter. It's probably 'underused' simply because there aren't that many redheads and it'd be nonsensical to use it for a kid who wasn't one. I do hope the canine Rufuses are all foxy coloured too!

There's probably a church social quiz question there, name a redhead in the bible! Grin

Archer? Dum de dum de dum de dum, dum de dum de dum dum...

ErrolTheDragon · 12/01/2017 09:36

No, that's definitely Archers plural. ArchersGrin

Church social quizzes and The Archers, I think we live in different worlds! You should talk with my mother in law.Smile

Living in New York recently for other half's work, so I wonder if the surname thing has become normalized for me? Maybe not a good thing?? Thinking about Rufus Archer. Or maybe back to the long list!

Rufus but only if he grows up to look like Mr SewellSmile

I'm afraid Archer makes me think of that vile stuff my niece drinks.

bluechameleon · 14/01/2017 09:17

I think that although Archer is not very common it might lose its feeling of freshness because of how many Archies there are.

MiniMaxi · 14/01/2017 09:18

Rufus Archer sounds great!

Misssss · 14/01/2017 09:23

Archer! Great name and love the family connection. He's also my fave TV character.

LarrytheCucumber · 14/01/2017 17:58

There is an Archer Charles Derek in the birth column of the Daily Telegraph today.

MikeUniformMike · 14/01/2017 18:15

How about Rory?

MikeUniformMike · 14/01/2017 18:28

I'd go for Archer because of the family connection.
