Would you choose Vivienne, Poppy or Alice?

We have a while to go yet and don't know if we're having a DD or DS but we're starting to think seriously about names.

Vivienne is my absolute favourite name and has been for years but sadly DH isn't keen. His favourite is Poppy which I don't hate, but it is much more popular than I would like (though it does seem to have peaked). Our compromise name is Alice and I would be happy with that, but I still hope to convince him that Vivienne is a beautiful name; not ugly and old fashioned!!

Which of the three is your favourite?

I like all three which isn't very helpful I know.

Poppy doesn't say "dog" to me perhaps because I knew a human Poppy before a dog Poppy!

Would you pronounce it "Vivien" or "Vivi-enne"? Either way I like Vivi as a nn.

Penelope as an alternative?

Anononoo · 05/01/2017 11:49

Vivienne is a lovely name. Alice is a good second.

AlwaysTeaTime · 05/01/2017 11:56

I love Alice and Vivienne, but would go for Alice if you both like it

ViewBasket · 05/01/2017 15:04

Poppy

littledinaco · 05/01/2017 15:07

Vivienne is beautiful. Poppy is very popular. Alice is ok, quite popular though and a bit boring.

whirliebird · 05/01/2017 15:12

Vivienne :-)

heron98 · 05/01/2017 15:31

Sorry, but VIVIENNE?

Unless you want to give birth to a bridge-playing member of the village association it's a no from me.

Poppy is too twee.

I like Alice.

Thank you for all the responses-it's great to see the love for Vivienne.

I totally agree with the replies saying that we should both at least like the name if not love it and I am happy with a compromise name. Just had to attempt one final push for Vivienne Smile

After all this, I bet the scan shows we're having a boy anyway!!

Vivienne. Love it. Though various spellings as pointed out.

caffelatte100 · 05/01/2017 21:51

I love Vivienne too! Alice is ok. Don't like Poppy at all.

Natsku · 05/01/2017 21:56

Alice. Although be prepared for 'alice, alice, who the fuck is alice' (had a school friend called Alice, she heard that a lot)

Do like the name Vivienne but always makes me think of The Young Ones (although that's not a bad thing of course)

  1. Alice
  2. Vivienne
  3. Poppy
VerityChristmas · 05/01/2017 22:04

Vivienne

SantasLittleMonkeyButler · 05/01/2017 22:09

I have a Poppy. I'm always amused at the comments the name receives on MN Grin.

I love Vivienne but really don't like Alice - Alice always sounds very 'wet' to me.

We also had Mia on our shortlist.

RussianCoffee · 05/01/2017 22:12

Alice

reuset · 05/01/2017 22:14

Alice.

Salmotrutta · 05/01/2017 23:25

I love Vivienne - so underused now.

In fact the last Vivienne I knew was at school about 40 years ago! Shock

She was very clever and knew her own mind!

Yika · 05/01/2017 23:30

Alice.

I find Vivienne stodgy and Poppy too lightweight. Alice is very classic and has a nice meaning.

llangennith · 05/01/2017 23:37

Alice. I don't like Vivienne and Poppy is so common.

BackforGood · 05/01/2017 23:48

Vivienne

Not that keen on Alice - don't know why, no particular reason, but I'm just not keen.

Really don't like Poppy. One of dd's (teenage) friends is Poppy, and it always sounds like a pet name rather than a real one.

early30smum · 06/01/2017 00:24

Of the 3, Poppy is my favourite.

Jooni · 06/01/2017 17:31

Vivienne. Though I also prefer Vivien - seems less fussy.

Poppy is overused and too sweet, and Alice feels a little bit wet to me too (sorry!)

Penelope is a good suggestion. You could even have Poppy as a cute childhood nickname.
