What names are considered 'mum names'?

I was on an American forum and someone commented that a name was such a 'mom name' in the US (ie very popular with women in their 30s)? Just wondered what the equivalent names are in the UK right now?

I have lots of mum friends called Jo, Sarah, Claire, Vicky, Becky and Nicky.

I wouldn't say they are particularly mum names though-just names of people I was at school with who were born the same time as me who have grown up to have kids.

Basically the top 50 names from 30 years ago.

A quick search on names popular around 1980 will tell you!

In a few years time every other mum will be Olivia, Grace or Daisy Smile

Do you think there are any mum names that are still usable today? Or any that are definitely not?

Sarah and Emma are timeless I think.

Most of the others sound dated IMO

I think Rebecca and Nicola are the only ones I know of that's been used on an under-10 round here.

I've never met any young girls called Sarah, Sally or Louise. But know hundreds my own age. Timeless names would be ones like Anne, Elizabeth, or maybe Emily or Anna. I know women and little girls with those names. There are more timeless boys names though.

Names of women born from 2000 backwards?

Confusednotcom · 04/01/2017 23:14

Al the ones I was going to say have been said already. I don't see a problem with choosing a name that was popular years ago if you like it now?

In New Zealand and for my tiny bubble of a world these are the most common:

Kirsty
Nicky
Anna
Laura
Michelle
Katy

I love the name Louise for a little girl!

Rather off topic I'm afraid but here's a list of names compiled from The Times birth announcements 1985: Clemency, Thomasina, Willemyn among others.
