Girl name dilemma

Mummymooretobe · 04/01/2017 11:20

Okay so there's this name for a baby girl name that I just can't get out of my head.
I have heard many negative comments about it and my OH isn't too convinced at the moment. But to me it is just so beautiful, it is a family name, belonged to my great-grandmother and is still a very precious name to my grandma.

The name is Mimosa.
Now I know many people say they immediately think of the "drink" when they hear it.. but it's the Plant/flower she would be named after as was my great grandmother.

I'm thinking of having it as a double barrel name: "Mimosa-Lily Moore" or perhaps even "Mimosa-Lily Jade Moore"

I'm after some ideas for nicknames, as this may be able to convince my husband of this name.
As it's "Mimosa-Lily" I liked the idea of "Milly" as a nickname for her.
Does anyone else have any ideas for a nickname? Or other middle name ideas perhaps?

Thanks in advanceSmile

Mimosa is great. Lots of nicknames she could choose from too.

Mimosa Lily is great.

Mimosa-Lily is awful, sorry :(

reuset · 04/01/2017 18:17

Mim and Mimsy both mean prim and proper, and missish, overly so. I don't think those make good nick names personally.

1horatio · 04/01/2017 18:23

Do not double barrel it. And don't use two flower names!

Mimosa Catherine Moore
Mimosa Louise Moore
Mimosa Josephine Moore
Mimosa Angelique Moore
Mimosa Perenelle Moore
Mimosa Artemis Moore
Mimosa Annabelle Moore
Mimosa Clementine Moore
Mimose Severine Moore
Mimosa Susanne Moore
Mimosa Genevieve Moore
Mimosa Gwen Moore
Mimosa Angelina Moore
Mimosa Cleodie Moore
Mimosa Patience Moore
Mimosa Ottilie Moore
Mimosa Odette Moore

All perfectly lovely names imo. I like the name Mimosa. But Mimosa-Lily? No way. First names shouldn't be double barrelled. And Lily is lovely but very popular. And too flowery with Mimosa.

1horatio · 04/01/2017 18:24

But the name Mimosa is really lovely imo.

Makes me think of the flower :)!

MikeUniformMike · 04/01/2017 18:35

Mimosa is beautiful.
Don't hyphen first names. Mimosa-Lily is awful sorry. Mimosa and Lily are pretty names but the hyphen weakens both. -Mae and -Rae are just as bad. Joining the names into Mimosalily results in a bit of a mess. Stick with Mimosa if you like it. I don't like the name Jade - it was nice enough for Jade Jagger cos it was unusual then but it's a bit overused now. Mim, Milly and Mimi are also nice as nn. Would Lily Mimosa be OK or too flowery.

Makes me immediately think of the drink I'm afraid. Maybe keep it as a middle name?

DramaAlpaca · 04/01/2017 19:05

Mimosa makes me think of the flower. I've never heard of the drink.

It's quite pretty, but a bit too much double barrelled with another name.

I don't really like the alliteration you'd get with Mimosa as the first name, but it would make a great middle name.

Lily Mimosa Moore would be lovely.

Oly5 · 04/01/2017 19:09

Mimosa-Lily is awful
Milly Moore is fabulous
Or Use a mimosa as a middle name
All I cans think of us the cocktail. The poor kid would get harassed

WyfOfBathe · 04/01/2017 19:14

I don't like it, I immediately thought of the drink. Could you maybe call her Lily Mimosa, with Mimosa as the middle name?

Atomium · 04/01/2017 19:15

Smile at those calling Mimosa a cocktail. It's just weak Buck's Fizz!

1horatio · 04/01/2017 19:25

Mimosa is a really lovely name

But 'Milly' Mimosa Lily? I personally don't like it.

There are other names that would make Milly a reasonable nickname option, btw.

What about Millicent? Mila? Milena? Melinda, Camilla, Emily, Romilly, Emilia?

MikeUniformMike · 04/01/2017 19:46

OP wants the name Mimosa not Millicent etc.

Mimosa Moore is too much. I would find a first name that both the OP and her DH like and keep Mimosa as a middle name.

OP, what is your Nan's first name? Could you use that instead? I would go for a first name with one or two syllables with at least one strong consonant.

Something like Grace Mimosa Moore or Elsie Mimosa Moore?

reuset · 04/01/2017 19:59

OP wants the name Mimosa not Millicent etc

She also wants to use the nick name Milly. It's usual for posters to offer alternative or similar suggestions, Mikeuniform. He/she isn't bound to take our advice (though sometimes they ought to, I feel Grin).

Mummymooretobe · 05/01/2017 08:34

I see what you all mean about double barrelling it, and so I definitely will not do that now. However I'd like to keep Mimosa as the first name, and I know Lily is also a flower but I chose it as my grandmothers name is Lillian, I don't like Mimosa Lillian, but thought Mimosa Lily was very cute.

Flower with another flower attachedConfused

Pluto30 · 05/01/2017 08:59

Mimosa is just a cocktail. It might be a flower, but the stronger association for many people is a drink.

Don't like it at all.

I also don't think Milly for Mimosa Lily works at all.

MikeUniformMike · 05/01/2017 09:40

Milly Moore sounds good. Not keen on Lillian - it's ok but Lily is a prettier name. Lily Moore sounds great.
I interpreted the OP as saying that they could use Milly as nn for Mimosa-Lily not they definitely wanted to use the nn Milly.

Call the baby whatever you and your DH like OP, but Mimosa is lovely.
