What do you think of the name Galina? And do you prefer the spelling Galina or Galena?

DC is due is 5 days and we're still at a loss for a name. DH likes this one with the nickname Gigi.

I like it. Are you Russian?

lljkk · 03/01/2017 21:12

hen?... in Spanish I think it's Gallina... too close for me.

I think Geraldine nn Gigi could work (or simply Gina).

OverAndAbove · 03/01/2017 21:14

Isn't it lead ore? In which case it would be Galena. I much prefer Geraldine as suggested by the pp

orangepudding · 03/01/2017 21:15

Galina I would pronounce the ending like Tina , Galena like Lenny. Which way are you pronouncing the name?

isupposeitsverynice · 03/01/2017 21:16

I like Galina

Pluto30 · 03/01/2017 21:16

We aren't Russian, but DH is Norwegian so we need a name that works there as well and I don't like a lot of Scandi names. Blush

omg, it just means hen to me. no lo hagas.

Pluto30 · 03/01/2017 21:17

We'd pronounce the ending like Tina orange, so thanks for that insight! Perhaps Galina makes more sense then.

fueledbybacon · 03/01/2017 21:18

Gallina is Italian for hen also. I can't get passed that.

TwoCirclesthatdontoverlap · 03/01/2017 21:18

No I apologise hen is gallina with two lls.

Pluto30 · 03/01/2017 21:18

Neither of us have any connection with Spain or any knowledge of Spanish. We live in Australia, so I don't think the hen association would be a thing here. Smile

The one I know is Galena (rhymes with Tina).

howtheheckdoidealwiththis · 03/01/2017 21:22

What a pretty name! Prefer the Galina spelling. Don't know anything about the hen references! Gigi is gorgeous nn.

elQuintoConyo · 03/01/2017 21:28

It screams chicken to me too. Lo siento Blush

Sophronia · 03/01/2017 21:30

Galina

talkshowhost97 · 03/01/2017 22:02

I like Galina (to rhyme with Tina) and also nn Lina is lovely. Not so keen on Gigi but sure it could be cute on a really little one.

If I read Galena I would say it with a long eh sound or even Ga-lay-na.

Sugarpiehoneyeye · 03/01/2017 22:09

Galina.

1horatio · 03/01/2017 22:16

For me personally Galina is too close to gallina. Which means hen in Italian...

And whilst Italian may not be widely spoken there are quite a lot of Italians. And combine that with all the people that speak Spanish...

So, definitely Galena.
What about Carina/Karina?

OpalTree · 03/01/2017 22:21

I like it (but never learned Spanish or Italian, so wouldn't make that association.) Reminds me of a character in a book i read years ago called "The Summer of the Barshinskeys."

OpalTree · 03/01/2017 22:22

Sorry, should have specified it's Galina i like and that was the character in the book

Raines100 · 03/01/2017 22:23

Galina.
Galena is lead glance.

sassolino · 03/01/2017 22:27

Not sure about Gigi being short for Galina. Russian nicknames for Galina would be Galia/Galya, Galinka, Galochka, Galchonok, Galka

sassolino · 03/01/2017 22:29

And the name has origins in ancient Greek and means tranquility and silence

EweAreHere · 03/01/2017 22:31

There are loads of lovely Norwegian girls names (we have lots of Norwegian nieces). :)

lljkk · 03/01/2017 22:32
