Opinions on Reuan for a boy (pronounced ' rew-un') ?

So it's pronounced like the word "ruin"?

I don't mind the sound, but think the association is quite negative.

Pluto30 · 27/12/2016 20:07

Perhaps Reuben?

T2016 · 27/12/2016 21:02

Where we are from we would pronounce 'ruin' 'rew-in' whereas Reuan would be 'rew-un' like Reuben too

I quite like it.

Struan is a good name too (means Stream and is also a place on the Isle of Skye)

mathanxiety · 27/12/2016 22:28

How about the Irish name Ruan instead?

I think it's too close to 'ruin'. The distinction between rew-un and rew-in is too small.

T2016 · 27/12/2016 22:30

Do like that spelling too.. however worried that people wouldn't know how to pronounce?

Just looking at is id guess it was pronounced roo-an (roo as in "kangaroo" and an as in "and"

Do think it is a bit close to ruin. Like PP suggestion of Reuben.

Raines100 · 28/12/2016 08:49

Mother's ruin... 🍸 Blush

1horatio · 28/12/2016 21:27

I have no idea how to pronounce that. But I'm not English, so I guess I'll ask DH if he'd know...

What about Raoul?

LoupGarou · 29/12/2016 00:11

I love it, and would have pronounced it Rew-un. I think its unusual but sounds beautiful and classic. Were we looking for a boys name I may very well steal it, but not likely to ever need to choose a name again!

QuodPeriitPeriit · 29/12/2016 00:15

I wouldn't because where I'm from it would be pronounced identically to "ruin" with the second vowel sound being the unstressed schwa. Like Struan though.

1horatio · 29/12/2016 00:19

DH pronounced this like ruin as well...

T2016 · 29/12/2016 16:26

Hmmmm.. don't like struan or raoul in the slightest

OP posts:
1horatio · 29/12/2016 16:46

I'm not trying to make you not like the name.

To me personally it looks too much like 'reuen', which means to be sorry for/to regret in German. But unless you're planning to move to a German speaking country that doesn't matter.

I think you should go for the name you love. I had a few names I liked and then ultimately went with the one people on mumsnet liked the least of my final choices (DH only my got veto rights because he insisted on DD getting his last name...) and I've never regretted it.

DH only got my veto rights

Puremince · 29/12/2016 16:52

If I saw this written down I would guess it was pronounced like Euan with an R in front. So Rr-yew-an. But once I'd been corrected I wouldn't get it wrong again. I'm in Scotland, and guess a lot of people would see it as Euan with an R in front.

T2016 · 29/12/2016 23:26

Thanks all :)

Reuben?

T2016 · 29/12/2016 23:56

Like Reuben too but wanted something a little less heard of!

RosieThorn · 30/12/2016 00:17

I think the spelling Ruan would be more easily recognisable as being pronounced how you want it to be than Reuan tbh

keekaw · 30/12/2016 07:12

I love it

T2016 · 30/12/2016 17:07

Yay

Great name

Dottysims · 30/12/2016 21:26

I like it. Im just thinking about when he's older and it can then be used against him. But its your choice, your son 😀 Isn't it hard to choose the right one!!

T2016 · 30/12/2016 23:23

Used against him how?
