Hi all, my husband and I are trying to decide on a name. We like Lianna, but were wondering how most people would pronounce it...

Lee-anna then maybe correcting myself to Lie-anna

HeadElf · 09/12/2016 00:37

Lee-ar-ma

HeadElf · 09/12/2016 00:38

Bloody autocorrect! LEE-AR-NA

Primaryteach87 · 09/12/2016 00:41

Lee-ar-na

MuppetsChristmasCarol · 09/12/2016 00:42

Lee-arn-a

Primaryteach87 · 09/12/2016 00:42

If you want it to be Lee-anna I would add a hyphen so Li-anna as would be more obvious to people

Out2pasture · 09/12/2016 00:45

why would you pronounce it with an R at any point in the name? can those of you that would say it as lee-aRn-a explain?

ChewedUpRope · 09/12/2016 00:58

Lee-Anna, quite clearly. No way you need to add a hyphen.

Rhymes with Juliana/Julianna, Rhianna, Mariana, etc.

maymay123 · 09/12/2016 01:00

Interesting.. is Arna the American pronouncation like Elsa & Arna from Frozen even though it's spelt Anna?

I prefer Lee Ann rather than Lee Arna..

plimsolls · 09/12/2016 01:01

Lee-Anna

(I would say Lee-AR-na possibly for Liana but not Lianna)

MrsTerryPratchett · 09/12/2016 01:04

Lee-ana. No idea where people are getting the R from!

ChocoChou · 09/12/2016 01:12

Lee-Anna. The double 'n' leads to Anna rather than Arna (Liana)

Vanillamanilla1 · 09/12/2016 01:16

Lee arn ah

QuimReaper · 09/12/2016 01:42

As Choco says a double N makes an Anna and a single N makes an Ahna.

At a glance though, people might come out with Li-Ahna. I confess that was my first thought for some reason.

Please don't hyphenate it though Confused

(Incidentally it's proNUNciation, not proNOUNciation.)

MrsGsnow18 · 09/12/2016 02:11

Lee-Anna.

ElizabethHoney · 09/12/2016 02:41

Lee-Anna. No way you need to add a hyphen.
Rhymes with Juliana/Julianna, Rhianna, Mariana, etc

My grandmother was Juliana, pronounced Julie-AR-na
I'd assume that Liana would be Lee-AR-na, but that Lianna could be that or Lee-AN-na, but most probably the latter.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 09/12/2016 02:55

Lee-Ana rather than Lee-Arna

Bellaposy · 09/12/2016 03:32

Lee-Anna. Please don't add a hyphen.

NiceFalafels · 09/12/2016 03:42

Lee anna

Pluto30 · 09/12/2016 03:44

Lee-Anna.

Liana would be Lee-Ah-Nah or Lee-Ar-Nah.

Juliana and Julianna are pronounced differently too...

SelfCleaningVagina · 09/12/2016 03:53

I know a woman called Lianna and she pronounces it
Lee- Arna.

But from the double N I can easily see why people might assume it was Lee-Anna.

KoalaDownUnder · 09/12/2016 03:55

Today 01:12 ChocoChou

Lee-Anna. The double 'n' leads to Anna rather than Arna (Liana)

Exactly.

TheDowagerCuntess · 09/12/2016 03:55

The people getting confused by the 'r' probably have a rhotic accent. Li-ahna is probably a better way to describe it.

FGS, do not hyphenate it.

SelfCleaningVagina · 09/12/2016 04:15

Oh no I've just checked my friends Facebook profile and her name only has one N which makes more sense for a Lee-Arna.

SelfCleaningVagina · 09/12/2016 04:17

The point is not how we would pronounce it based on your choice of spelling but how you should spell it to get the pronunciation you want.

If you want a Lee-Anna then spell it Leanna.People are very familiar with Leanne so will manage this.

If you want Lee-Arna with a long A spell it Liana.
