Trendy/Unique Boys Names!

MrsMoore2803 · 30/11/2016 16:06

So I am currently 7 months pregnant with my first babies (we're having twin boys!) and me and DH still haven't thought of names. We have been looking and have a small list of boys names that we like although we would like to add more to this list to decide from. Does anyone have any suggestions of "trendy"/"unique" boys names?

We are liking Jude and Flynn so far but would love to hear your opinions/suggestions.

Thanks :)

Not exactly sure what to put down here but I'll have a go!

Sullivan
Mack
Fletcher
Morris
Jericho
Axl
Beckett
Sterling
Elvis
Tate
Dashiell
Gulliver
Ralph
Frank

Elbi · 30/11/2016 23:31

These days there will likely be many more Judes and Flynns in his class than Matthews! Don't think I know a single little Matt...

Joinourclub · 01/12/2016 11:34

Winston
Walter
Baxter
Dashiel
Otis
Rocco
Ferdinand
Kit
Ambrose
But the really unusual names will be Paul, Peter, Colin, Kevin etc

BonusNewt · 01/12/2016 11:42

You really can't tell which names will be popular. We used to live in hipster central, Dalston, and it was hilarious at the toddler groups when people who thought they had given their children unusual names were confronted with two others in the same group. There were mums giving each other dagger looks during the "hello" song. "Hello Arlo, hello Another Arlo, hello Hamish, hello another Hamish, hello yet another Hamish..."

MiniMaxi · 01/12/2016 11:56

Love Jude and Flynn!

Some random thoughts:
Arlo
Finn
Dash
Orson
Duke
Edison
Huxley
Levi
Woody

Gary? Apparently it's in danger of becoming extinct, so likely to be the only one.

Alan? That's surely due a revival, I think it sounds quite cool now...well maybe

SovietKitsch · 01/12/2016 12:12

But yes to Matthew being more likely to be the only one than the hipster names - my DSs have traditional names, neither are at all out there, and neither or them have ever had a child with the same name in their class, and DS1 has never had a child with the same name in the same school! And they really are remarkably ordinary, but lovely, names

fleurdelacourt · 01/12/2016 12:16

have a Matthew and he was the only one in his entire primary school!!!

When dd was at nursery there was a Seth A and a Seth S - so however unusual/hipster you try to be, it's no guarantee that someone else won't have had the same idea?

(quite like Jude and Flynn btw!)

Level75 · 01/12/2016 21:43

I called my son Iver. It's a Scottish /Scandinavian name. It's more commonly spelt Ivor but I didn't like that. It's uncommon enough that it's not on the ONS list (so less than 3 with the name).

enchantmentandlove · 01/12/2016 22:23

Love Jude and Flynn!

Quinn
Jasper
Fletcher
Fraiser
Isaiah
Zachary
Jenson
Albie

TheCakes · 01/12/2016 22:29

DS best friend is called Matthew and there is another in his class.
No Judes or Flynns though.
It's not very hip round here.

qumquat · 01/12/2016 22:40

Names in the hipster area I used to live:

Otto
Freddie
Stan
Wilf
Alfred
Arthur
Athelstone

Lots of Grandad chic.

I agree with others that if you want unusual Matthew isn't a bad bet! Any typical 70s or 80s names are likely to be unusual now e.g. Mark, Jonathan, David etc.

bluechameleon · 01/12/2016 22:55

The "cool" people I know have boys called:
Stanley
Jonah
Wolf
Woody
Rafe

HOHOHOvariesBeforeBrovaries · 02/12/2016 07:30

Love Jude and Flynn!

Eli
Asa
Rafferty
Huxley
Hudson
Auden
Bruno
Lennon
Edison
Emerson
Emmett
Tate
Jasper
Levi
Wyatt
Nico
Otis

Gruffalosfriend · 02/12/2016 08:38

Similar to Jude and Flynn:

Quinn
Rex
Saul

drspouse · 02/12/2016 08:44

I have my DS reception class list here and if you want a name that isn't common in primary schools don't choose from this thread:
Charlie
Max
Stanley
Alfie (two)
Leo
Your boys will be starting primary school as mine leaves I think!

Gruffalosfriend · 02/12/2016 08:48

I'd avoid any top 50 or even top 100 or 200 names. There are so many lovely names to choose from. Our ds name was even outside the top 500 most popular names in the year he was born

drspouse · 02/12/2016 08:56

Oh I forgot Wyatt.

ImpYCelyn · 02/12/2016 09:05

Or you could look at foreign names... DH is French and we're both French teachers, so picked French names for our boys. And then picked unusual names by French standards. All three have shortened forms that are easy to pronounce and easily recognisable. And when speaking English we pronounce them the English way.

We've just named DS3. French family remarked that it was the most unusual yet. Except it's not, on paper it's the most common of the three in France (123rd),with a nickname that places at number 2. But I think it's a consistent "just outside the top 100", whereas the other 2 have had peaks, so occasionally they crop up more often. You could also look for names like that Smile

For what it's worth, with DS1 we were torn between a name in the top 10, and one that was more like 510. We picked the one we liked the best. Much better to have a name you like, than hope you've bucked a trend. That happened to be the rarer one. But with DS1 and 3 we've had stuff on the shortlist that was practically unused until it shot up in the last couple of years. Names go in trends, so you're likely to hit something popular by mistake.

Baseballcupcakes · 02/12/2016 09:06

Hipsterish names tend to be popular so you may find you meet others with the same.

Some biblical names are becoming quite trendy at the moment:
Ezra
Josiah
Jonah
Elijah
Levi
Zachary
Abel
Caleb

Also:
Judd
Otis
Rex
Luca
Arthur

Jude and Flynn are both gorgeous but definitely not unusual. Have a look at names on the ons list, you will get a sense of popularity and might stumble across one you like.

BabooshkaKate · 02/12/2016 09:10

Jude and Isaac would be a nice pair.

SorenaJ · 03/12/2016 14:10

I quite like Wyatt.

It's highly unlikely that there'll be 5 with the same name in your DSs class. Say, there are 15 boys in a class. Then in order to be 5 with that name, that name will have to be give to 33% of a year group. The top 3 boys names are given to 2-1.5%. This means that in an average size primary school of 250 pupils, you're only likely to find 2 of each of the top 3 names.

In conclusion: call your kids whatever you want, they are likely to be the only ones in their school.

Mathew, your example, is given to 0.357% of newborn boys, which means that you'll need 2 average sized primary schools to just find one boy named Matthew.

BertrandRussell · 03/12/2016 14:41

So glad to see that post Sorena. People seem to think that being in the top 50 means that 1:50 has the name. To be honest, I did, until I sat down and worked it out once!

I wouldn't use Wyatt- too much scope for "Oh, why did you do that, Wyatt?" Type jokes.
