Hi, we're looking for a boys name to go with sister Margot. Which do you like best in order of preference?
Ralph
Jack
Hamish
Lawrence
or
Rufus?

Thanks!

Hmm at the "trying too hard" comment. I couldn't disagree more. I think it's a lovely list.

Anyway, "try hard" is such a nonsense criticism, which is frequently wheeled out on the baby name threads unless the names in question are really bland and overused. I really don't see the point in comments like this. It's not constructive or helpful in any way.

Really love your list!!

They are all great names but Lawrence and Hamish are my top choices.

I immediately thought of Rufus before even reading your suggestions!

Hamish

Jack
Ralph

Rufus - inexplicably hate this name.

Thanks for all the feedback, it looks like Hamish and Rufus are just about the favourites. (But both are a bit marmite!) Jack is our compromise name, but yes not very exciting.
Thnx for the suggestions, Angus is my absolute favourite but DH has vetoedSad. Very annoying. Alistair is DH's name so that's a no go! James is a good name but just not an all-time favourite for me.

I agree with Jayne - definitely Jerry. Grin

Seriously though, my favourite from your original list is Jack and my favourite from your "top two" is Hamish.

Rufus is an awful name for a human. Sorry!

Just to add to the "try hard" comments.

I never quite understand how someone can try too hard to pick the best name for their child. Surely you're supposed to try hard Confused.

I like Henry and George too thanks NavyandWhite, seem to have a lot of friends with babies with these two names which, rightly or wrongly, puts me off a bit. They are both good names though.

Rufus is a bit too close to Rudolf, cf Margot Fonteyn and Rudolf Nureyev...or maybe that's just me!

Our parents both think Rufus is a dogs name. People really do love or hate that one!
As for trying too hard - you're so right SantasLittleMonkey I think you're supposed to try hard too!Smile
Gilbert has recently been suggested to me too? (Love it as it reminds me of Anne of Green Gables!) Margot and Gil?

Agree Stinkingbishop we can't have Rudolph / Rudy. Steering clear of all ballet-themed or The Good Life-themed names!!Grin

I was coming on to say Angus but I see it's a no.
I love Margot and Angus.
I also love Gregory as it has nice nn Rory or Greg.

Of course Gerald would be perfect. Too, too good Smile

In order, from your names OP, I'd choose Rufus, Hamish, Lawrence. But with your criteria, my own choice would be Charles or Nicholas.

Or Jeremy nn Jerry?
