Op your issue will be that old fashioned grandad type names are very popular, so the names you think are nice are likely to be relatively fashionable at the moment. You'd be better off looking at classic names that were popular in the 60s and 70s than those that were big in the 30s and 40s. Otherwise might pick a great name that you thought would be unusual and find instead that it booms in popularity (speaking from experience here!)

This site only starts in 1996 but gives some nice charts showing name popularity.

Do you like names like Christopher, Richard, Stephen or Jonathon or do they feel too modern?

They are too modern really. Yes that's exactly my problem, I love Arthur but it's so common now!

The victorians loved Germanic and Anglo-Saxon or Norman names. Why not look up some if those? Kenelm?

The Elizabethans loved Classical names, as still the French do. And the Greeks, Romanians and some Italians.
