Is Sebastian a pretentious name?

It's the only name DP and I can agree on. I think it's a lovely, sophisticated name but could be seen as a bit 'try hard' and pretentious.

Thoughts?

Not at all. The only one I knew growing up was from a council estate.

septembersunshine · 16/11/2016 19:33

Its lovely. We know a Sebastian. Seb is very cool! Popular but not weird. You have nailed it!

SleepFreeZone · 16/11/2016 19:40

I have a Sebastian. It's become pretty common my way so I assume it's not considered pretentious at all. We do call him Sebastian but I suspect it will get shortened at school.

fartlek · 16/11/2016 19:48

I have a Sebastian. At the moment he's a Sebby but will probably be a Seb. We're not posh. A lady once asked me his name when he was a baby and when I told her she was very derogatory about how posh it sounded. She was a smelly cow and I still love his name.

I know a Sebastiano known as Sebi....it's cool.

Essexmum69 · 16/11/2016 19:54

I know a teenage Sebastian, which I love as a name, unfortunately he is known to most as Baz!

Sugarpiehoneyeye · 16/11/2016 20:00

It's a fabulous name, please use it ! 😄

Allalonenow · 16/11/2016 20:05

It's a great name, not posh or pretentious. The Sebastian I know has Basti for his nn.

SausageSoda · 17/11/2016 09:49

Love it. Was in in our list though we had a DD. We're not pretentious at all and I wouldn't associate it with being so Grin

Gruffalosfriend · 17/11/2016 10:34

What does 'pretentious' actually mean Hmm ?

Personally I like Sebastian but don't like the nicknames (Seb/bie reminds me of sebacious/oily and Basty is too similar to Bastard)

Myu5ername · 17/11/2016 13:21

Great name. Not pretentious

Mummyme87 · 18/11/2016 09:58

I have a Sebastian, and I have a friend with a Sebastian. Love the name. Slightly more common in posh groups but not like Hugo or Crispin.
Sebastian Coe, Sebastian Vettel... all very cool. Destined to be active and sporty 😀

MrsKoala · 18/11/2016 23:00

It's the most common name in my boys pre-school. There are 4 of them in the class. We liked it but there are so many round here, so it doesn't seem 'posh' to me, just really popular.

megletthesecond · 18/11/2016 23:02

There's 3 that in know of at the dc's school. One Seb, a Sebastian and a Sebby.

It's a cool name.

User1987654 · 18/11/2016 23:04

Don't think it's posh. Go for it.

Pluto30 · 18/11/2016 23:11

Nope.

Although the way some people pronounce it sure as shit makes it sounds pretentious. My grandmother insists on pronouncing it "seh-bass-tee-en". Guy "Sebasstienne". So horrid.

When it's pronounced with three syllables, it's fine. Not pretentious at all. I've known two: one of French background (but born and raised in Australia), and one with one Polish parent and one Australian parent.

JudgeJudySheidlin · 18/11/2016 23:12

I don't care if it is posh or pretentious! It is a fabulous nameWink
