Whats your thoughts? It sounds nice with our tricky surname and is difficult to shorten. I know it's a surname but I don't have an issue you that.

Hate it

HardcoreLadyType · 13/11/2016 15:00

I'm Australian, so it means a car manufacturer to me.

Second thought is The Catcher in the Rye, and he's not exactly the type of literary figure to name your son for (not like, say, Atticus).

But it's not awful.

AtiaoftheJulii · 13/11/2016 15:01

Holden Caulfield. Whom I love, so I'd be well disposed towards your baby.

canihaveacoffeeplease · 13/11/2016 15:05

I thought aussie cars too. They are what Aussies call Vauxhall basically.

raviolidreaming · 13/11/2016 15:10

I think everyone will associate with Holden Caulfield

I have no idea who that is.

Flowercat16 · 13/11/2016 15:12

Aussie Holden car and using a surname as first name. Surely you can come up with a better name than this?

OlennasWimple · 13/11/2016 15:14

I'm in the US and know two boys called Holden

Shitonyoursofa · 13/11/2016 15:15

I like it. But then I'm in the middle of AHS Hotel and the little vampire boy Holden is adorable!

user1470686892 · 13/11/2016 15:24

Ok, just done a little straw poll, asked 3 friends to ask their husbands/sons if they'd heard of the Aussie cars...big fat zero, neither had I and I love cars so really doesn't seem to be an issue here in the UK.

pinkieandperkie · 13/11/2016 15:27

My first thought was Amanda.

Sophronia · 13/11/2016 15:27

Holden Caulfield. I like it.

BobbieDog · 13/11/2016 15:28

Im not quite sure why you have posted on here for opinions on the name as you are determined to like and use the name and you are incredibly defensive of it which says you have made your mind up so why post asking opinions on it?

DoYouRememberJustinBobby · 13/11/2016 15:28

Are you American? It sounds like one of those names Americans give to their children to sound like they live on the Upper East Side.
As a child everyone I known would have followed the name Holden with McCrotch and probably continued long into adulthood. Seriously.

DoYouRememberJustinBobby · 13/11/2016 15:29

Also (cross post) but what bobbie said.

BratFarrarsPony · 13/11/2016 15:32

Holden to what?

Also Holden Caulfield.

Sorry but no.

user1470686892 · 13/11/2016 15:39

I'm not at all defensive, just a bit exasperated by all the car comments which has no relevance here in the UK.

DoYouRememberJustinBobby · 13/11/2016 15:42

Oh and I have heard of the Australian cars too. Many people have visited Australia and even seen the cars they have there, heady times!
I think you're being snippy. If you like the name that's great, go for it but I can practically hear you snorting at the replies (re cars in particular) from here (not Australia).
Perhaps a 🇦🇺 or 🚗 as an accent over the O?

sleepachu · 13/11/2016 15:53

My first thought was Chasing Amy. And I've read Catcher in the Rye!

DoItTooJulia · 13/11/2016 16:01

Never heard of the car and like the name!

littlepinkmouseofsugar · 13/11/2016 16:04

First thing I think of is a car. One day your child might want to travel and/or work in Australia and the name would certainly result in comments.

BobbieDog · 13/11/2016 16:17

I didnt know Holden was the name for Vauxhall in Australia but as its not a recognised first name in the UK your son will have a lifetime of explain that its his first name not his surname.

Whats your name? Holden

And your first name?

People still sometimes say their surname before their first name. I know this as i work on telephone lines dealing with customers and when you ask their name they will say Jones, Jim Jones or whatever.

Raines100 · 13/11/2016 18:00

Caulfield. Love it.

InTheseFlipFlops · 13/11/2016 18:43

But you asked for our view?! I like the name, but to me it is car related and I've never been to Australia. I also know holders and monaros have a following over here. So if a few people on a parents forum have picked up the link, we won't be the only ones. I don't think it's a bad link, but it is one.

Enidblyton1 · 13/11/2016 19:05

I don't particularly like the sound of it, but I like the literary connection.
The kind of name I could see someone picking if they were a fan of Catcher in the Rye. Are you a fan?

user1470686892 · 13/11/2016 20:20

Can't call myself a fan Enid, loved the book tho.
I like the clean sound of it and how it will suit boy, teen and man.

A big plus is how it tones down DPs comic book sounding surname (Irish on steroids!)
