WDYT of Courtney??

As I'm going through some lists (I tend to like more "dated" and typical, boring names for Britain it seems??) I keep coming across names that I'm not entirely sure on, so I'm very sorry in advance if I end up posting again about another name ! (I think this should be my last one for now though !)

What do you think of the name Courtney?? I don't really know any, so I don't have any associations with the name - is it a good choice or is it too dated ??

If it helps, some other names I like are Bethan, Megan, Millie, Martha, Maisie, Claire, Rosie, Georgina and Kelly.

Thank you!

I don't like Courtney at all, I get the same image as Chinlo I'm afraid. Georgina, Martha, Millie, Megan and Rosie rare all nice, in that order

buttercup54321 · 09/11/2016 22:30

Claire or Georgina. But what about Samantha, Stephanie or Amanda xx

Perfectlypurple · 09/11/2016 22:32

I know a Courtney and she is lovely. It isn't chavvy either.

Maisie is my favourite from your list though.

BrianCoxWithBellsOn · 09/11/2016 22:38

In the 90's every other baby girl was Courtney (thanks to Friends and Courtney Cox)

As I was a teen in the 90's it is a name I don't particularly like as it was so commonly used and most classrooms had at least 1 if not more.

I then encountered a Courtney to beat all others. Nasty little madam who bullied my daughter and then told me "shut up you fat ugly bitch" when I told her to get away from my house. She was 9 at the time!

So, I naturally associate the name with that delightful child and may, therefore, be biased!

I love your other names but not overly keen on Georgina, Claire and Kelly (most of my class mates at primary were Claire's or Kelly's, so it seems old fashioned to me)

princesshaley · 10/11/2016 03:03

Thanks everyone. It makes a bit sad to see the chavvy thing being thrown about but I'm guessing the way my name is spelled is a bit chavvy too??

I probably should have been a bit clearer - I only shared my list to show what other names so you could see if it 'fit' with them, not for comments on the names but I definitely should have said that. Kelly is not everyone's cup of tea for example but is quite special to me.

I guess the Kourtney Kardashian thing is a problem (I barely know who Courtney Love is but I guess I'm dating myself there).

@buttercup - I love the name Stephanie!! So pretty! I've loved it since primary school, I had a friend with the name until year 3 when she moved away.

I really don't like it, it makes me think of Kardashians and drama. Martha is a lovely, elegant and not overused name.

KoalaDownUnder · 10/11/2016 05:28

No, awful. It's very Kimberley/Hayley/Tiffany.

Some names are just so terribly dated to an era. The names Kylie, Lisa and Michelle were so common in my generation that they're more like 'sounds' to me now, than names (if that makes any sense).

BillStickersIsInnocent · 10/11/2016 05:45

It's a very old name, comes from English aristocracy. It's part of our surname and I love it, but it is very attached now to a particular era.

SparkyBlue · 10/11/2016 06:00

It's awful. Sorry but there are several near me and all are right little madams so it reminds me of them.

mathanxiety · 10/11/2016 06:17

It's very Irish American and was first popularised by the Kennedys. One of the Kennedy families also has a Rory who is a girl. Courtney is a name used to signal Irish heritage in the US, or it was in the 80s and 90s.

Your baby has to live her whole life with the name you choose.

If you like names that might have been acceptable in the 70s and 80s, how about:
Jennifer
Lauren
Karen
Christine
Judith
Jacqueline
Rebecca
Rachel
Sarah
Nicola
Julie
Caroline
Pauline
Helen
Fiona
Louise
Susan
Robin
Angela

Cortney reminds me of Courtney Love and Nirvana. So... I would not go for it.

Bethan: sounds very rough and klutzy

Megan: I personally really don't like it. But objectively speaking it's probably a perfectly lovely choice.

Millie: an incredibly cute nickname. What about Millicent? Camille? Camilla? Milena? Emmeline? Emily?

Martha: nice

Maisie: too cutesy and nickname-y for an adult.
Claire: beautiful

Rosie: no. Rose however is beautiful. And Rosie would be a lovely nn.

Georgina: ok

Kelly: as long as the 2nd name isn't Ann(e)... yes, it's ok.

princesshaley · 10/11/2016 13:27

@koala - lol my name is Haley (Hayley without one of the y's), so maybe it's fitting that I like Courtney?? Grin

@mathanxiety - I'm aware of the fact that she'd have to live her whole life with whatever name I choose, I think that's what makes finding a name so difficult. There's a LOT of pressure to choose the "right" name that won't get her teased, bullied, judged, etc. and to choose a name that people won't resoundingly hate. :/

I love Lauren, Nicola and Louise!

Foxtato · 10/11/2016 21:43

I dislike it.
Lauren is nice!

mathanxiety · 10/11/2016 22:45

I think those three that you mentioned have stood the test of time, which I feel is a plus for a name.

basketoffreshveg · 10/11/2016 22:50

Strangely, Chinlo, your description matches the Courtney I knew!

I do quite like it but I was a Nirvana fan back in the day.

Nothing wrong with twee names. Seriously, give me an Isla and a Lily over a Tracy and a Lisa.

JudgeJudySheidlin · 11/11/2016 03:02

If you like Lauren, how about Lorna? It's a name we liked for DS.

Out of your list of names, I prefer Megan or Millie. My DH loved the name Bethan but I didn't yet loved Beth. DH refused to allow Beth as it wasn't a real name in his stupid opinion. As for Courtney, I'd blame pregnancy hormones for the love of 90s names & start again. Personally pregnancy hormones made me like tomatoes. Didn't name any of my DC thisGrin Forgive my humour, I can't sleep & it's 3am

HearTheThunderRoar · 11/11/2016 06:24

I wouldn't class Courtney as 'chavvy' (what an awful word!)I know a Courtney who's doing a law degree.

My DD is a late 90s baby and I know a few around her age so it is a name of it's time. However, it's still a really nice name, I like it.

I LOVE Megan OP, sadly my DH vetoed it.
