My oldest is Hattie Juniper. My youngest is Cleo Annika. Hattie and Cleo are bright and vivacious names. Hattie was to be Kate Annabelle. She came out with a head of dark red hair and I gave in to my ultimate guilty pleasure and named her Hattie. Haven't regretted it once. We have three names in mind, Charlie Desmond, Mabel Noelle and Gage/Gavin/Garrett Theodore. I can't think of anything else at the moment that we like. Iris James is something we like for a girl too, I guess. But, what I really want is opinions on Gage, Gavin and Garrett. Do you know any?
What are they like? Do you like the name?

I used to work for a Gage (many years ago), only time I've come across it, certainly unique.

W8woman · 07/11/2016 21:07

I know three Gavins. Not at all chavvy - I'd guess upper middle class, and at least one might be a posho in disguise. None are under forty though.

Gage is a bit...odd. Like greengage or a pressure guage.

Garrett is unusual but not in a dickish way - I like it.

Foxtato · 07/11/2016 21:08

Also Garrett has made me think of the name Grant which I think is similar and nicer.

W8woman · 07/11/2016 21:11

Pressure gauge.

DulcetMoans · 07/11/2016 21:13

Gage reminds me of pet cemetery straight away. No idea why the name sticks with me!

captaincunt · 07/11/2016 21:17

The only Garrett I have heard of is the Community character. Spoilers, he is not a cool person.

If you have or know a Gage, Gavin or Garrett...
jaggythistle · 07/11/2016 21:23

Gavin is a fairly normal name in Scotland I'd say, not used that often these days though. Most I know are 30s or older.

I'd have maybe considered it but it's my cousin's name. :)

Gage also made me think Pet Semetary!

Garret is unusual but not ridiculous.

As pp said Grant is also nice.

duskonthelawn · 07/11/2016 21:26

Another one who immediately thinks of Pet Semetary when they hear the name Gage!

Elbi · 07/11/2016 21:28

I like Garrett but maybe you'd have to pronounce it carefully so people don't think it's carrot?!

NetHag · 07/11/2016 21:28

They're awful.

Hattie and Cleo are fabulous. These names aren't.

TataEs · 07/11/2016 21:29

don't really like any of them.
initially i felt garrett was the best of a bad bunch, however gage could be cool maybe, i dunno, it takes a certain type of person to pull it off.

But... i love james as a mn for a girl. was my chosen name if ds had been a dd

MakeItStopNeville · 07/11/2016 21:52

I know 2 Garret's. Both in their 40s and both American.

rainbow99 · 07/11/2016 21:59

Sorry but I too have the exact same image as Hiphop for the name Gavin. It really doesn't go with your sibling names, it sounds so 90s and where I live it would be considered 'common'. With Garrett id be concerned that he would end up Gary so on that basis I'm saying Gage. That feels like it sits nicely with Hattie and Cleo

crayfish · 07/11/2016 22:21

What about Gabriel? Or Grant? Or Gregory?

Buntysoven · 07/11/2016 22:24

I prefer Crayfish's suggestions

ABCFamily · 07/11/2016 22:26

I went to school with a Gavin in the 90's. He was expelled for being a bellend (not sure of the details, so can only assume it was because of that). I've never really liked the name, and it does sound a bit dated.

Quite like both Garrett and Gage.

Sophronia · 07/11/2016 23:21

I know a 30 year old Christian fundamentalist Garrett from Texas. Don't know any Gavins or Gages.

Ontopofthesunset · 07/11/2016 23:27

Well, Garrett means attic (you know, penniless artists starving in a garret) and Gage is pronounced the same way as gauge meaning measure or scale, like fuel gauge, and it's also half of greengage. So both have rather odd associations for me. Gavin is an established name but more common amongst middle aged men.

justtowarm · 07/11/2016 23:28

Love Garrett :)

weegiemum · 07/11/2016 23:29

Gavin is one of the nicest men I've ever met. He's 45 (like me) and a brilliant dad to 3, including a dc who has Down's Syndrome. Gavin is amazing, I wish we saw them more often!

LadyFuchsiaGroan · 07/11/2016 23:37

I first read Pet Semetary when I was 12, and it horrified me so I will always associate the name Gage with that book.

BackforGood · 07/11/2016 23:44

I don't like Garrett as it sounds like a surname to me, and I don't like first names that sound like surnames - although I know there are lots about and some people do.

I really don't like Gage - as above, it sounds like a gauge / measure.

I taught a lovely Gavin once in around 1990. He had some special needs and was one of those pupils that was a real joy to have in the class. You've set me wondering where his is now and what he's up to. Grin

Pluto30 · 08/11/2016 02:33

Gage reminds me of a gun.

I don't like Garrett. It's choppy and harsh sounding, and also sounds like Gary (outdated).

I don't like Gavin, but do like the similar Evan.

HearTheThunderRoar · 08/11/2016 03:39

Garrett is awful.

Gavin is ok, perfectly usable name but very 90s like other PPL have said.

Gage is probably the best, I use to vaguely know a child Gage about 10 years ago, he's probably 15ish now.
