Thoughts on Ciara? I think I love it, but want to be 100%!

It's not something I'd go for because of how common it is here (though maybe not as common in babies as it was ~20 years ago) but it's a nice-sounding, classic name where I live - definitely go for it!

reallyanotherone · 07/11/2016 13:34

While I do like it, i automatically think kee-ar-a, even when I totally know it's pronounced Keer-a

Giratina · 07/11/2016 13:36

I know one who pronounces it See-a-ra just to confuse the issue.

Psychology90 · 07/11/2016 13:37

No one should pronounce it that way Grin there's only 1 pronunciation!

People who can't pronounce their own names are so depressing. The letters simply don't make those sounds!

Pipilangstrumpf · 07/11/2016 13:38

If YOU love it, you should choose it for your dd. It's a perfectly normal name (even though not my taste)

Pipilangstrumpf · 07/11/2016 13:39

But many names pronounce the C as S e.g. Celeste, Celine, Cynthia so why not Ciara?

JinkxMonsoon · 07/11/2016 13:39

I wouldn't be sure how to pronounce it.

See-ara
See-air-a
Key-ara
Key-air-a

And so on...

Psychology90 · 07/11/2016 13:40

Because that's not the way the name is pronounced Confused

For one thing, none of those C name have an I following the C. Ci does not make a see sound even in English.
But its not in English, its in Irish, which has a different sound for the letters. Cia is said like Key. There is no other way to say it!

NorbertDentressangle · 07/11/2016 13:47

I know a Ciara - pronounced Key-ara (although she is Italian so that might just be the Italian way).

If you want it to be pronounced Keer-ah I would have said Kira was the spelling

Psychology90 · 07/11/2016 13:49

No, Ciara is the spelling. Kira isn't even remotely right.

You could say that, but you'd be wrong.

You do get that different languages have different sounds, right?

WankersHacksandThieves · 07/11/2016 14:12

I have the male version. It's totally the correct spelling and no one I know wouldn't know how to pronounce it. The only other acceptable spelling is the non Gaelic Keira (from the Scottish Keir), although I've seen it as Kiera from anglisised Kieran but I'm not a fan.

Kira is a perfectly acceptable spelling

user1478450549 · 07/11/2016 16:03

Wrong again. Kira is an entirely different name.

Why are people so confused that Irish names, from Ireland, are pronounced the Irish way? Just because there may be other similar sounding names from other places doesn't mean you can insist they are all the same.

Ciara is an Irish name, with one distinct pronounciation. Kira is another name altogether.

Flywheel · 07/11/2016 16:09

Lovely name op. Go for it. It's a strong, pretty name and very easy to pronounce. The world would be very dull if only phonetically simple names were used.

Buttwing · 07/11/2016 16:13

I know about 5 people call Ciara and they all pronounce in Keer-ha.
Ki-ar-ra is spelt Chiara. Ch is pronounced as a hard C in Italian.

Buttwing · 07/11/2016 16:15

Sorry keer-ah, I'm making things worse!!

MaryPoppinsPenguins · 07/11/2016 16:15

I like it, but I read it as 'see air a'

Buttwing · 07/11/2016 16:16

See-ar-a? Like the car?!Confused

MaryPoppinsPenguins · 07/11/2016 16:31

There's a singer called Ciara and it's pronounced like the car... so that's why.

user1478450549 · 07/11/2016 16:32

No she's just pronouncing her name wrong. Italians pronounce CI as chee. E.g. Ciabatta

MaryPoppinsPenguins · 07/11/2016 16:37

User - as I said, I read it that way because of the singer.
