Baby girl is here, I feel like she's a Charlotte. Although we had decided on Layla/Leila!

Do you prefer Layla/Leila or Charlotte?

Thanks

Layla and Leila are pronounced the same as each other - 'lay-la'. Lyla and Lila are pronounced 'lie-la'. (In my experience and accent at least).

I prefer Charlotte anyway!

Really dislike Layla sorry, charlotte Much much better

Stillwishihadabs · 29/10/2016 18:41

We have a 9 year old Charlotte but almost went for Elodie would you consider that ?

Pluto30 · 29/10/2016 21:08

Yep, Layla and Leila are both pronounced Lay-lah, traditionally. Layla is the original spelling, and Leila is a variant.

Swimz · 29/10/2016 23:44

Pluto, you're wrong. Yes, they're both said as Lay-la, but Leila is the original.

Swimz · 29/10/2016 23:45

Leila is an Arabic name, Layla is the variant :)

ToujeoQueen · 29/10/2016 23:46

Charlotte is a lovely name.

BuntyFigglesworthSpiffington · 29/10/2016 23:47

Charlotte is very Boden and very middle England.

SpeckledyBanana · 29/10/2016 23:47

Pretty name, I like it.

Enidblyton1 · 29/10/2016 23:56

Love Charlotte. It's a classic.

I really like Leila (not quite so fond of Layla - not sure why!) but it does seem to be fashionable at the moment. For years I only had one friend with the name, but I know of lots of children called Lila/Leila/Laylas. Give it another few years I expect it will fade into obscurity again. So it might be a bit dating. Whereas Charlotte is a timeless classic...

There also seem to be different pronunciations for Leila - which could be annoying. My friend Leila is pronounced Lie-la (never Lay-la)

seagulllady · 30/10/2016 00:02

To me, Charlotte is a spoilt rich girl (may have something to do with one I knew while growing up), whereas both Layla and Leila sound beautiful, spirited, intelligent, and a bit glamorous when older. But it's all about personal associations/ tastes, so go with your heart OP.

Pluto30 · 30/10/2016 00:27

Er, Layla is an Arabic name and the closest spelling used in the story of Layla and the Majnun. The word from which the name comes is spelt "laylah".

Chottie · 30/10/2016 03:56

I would go with Leyla.

MudCity · 30/10/2016 04:02

Leila (pronounced Lay-la). Much less common and can't be shortened.

BradleyPooper · 30/10/2016 04:04

I have a 12 yo Charlotte and when she was born it wasn't such a common name. I think it's beautiful and strong and don't know any other charlottes around my dd's age but wonder if it's over-used now since William and Kate named their daughter.....

ClaudiaJean2016 · 30/10/2016 04:08

I love Charlotte.

I don't like Layla or Leila.

shrieklesoda · 30/10/2016 04:15

I didn't know that Leila was meant to be pronounced Layla. I've never met either a Layla or a Leila. I'm not really keen on it to be honest.

Charlotte is lovely, and despite the statistics I haven't met a baby girl for years called Charlotte. But it's very timeless and classic in a way that very few names are.

NameNumber2 · 30/10/2016 05:12

We have a Charlotte, she is 6. Most people call her Lottie, she has never been called Charlie. I love her name and have only come across one other child called Charlotte who is 12.

JunebabyT · 30/10/2016 11:39

I love Charlotte
Layla/Leila nice too but personally prefer charlotte

daisypond · 30/10/2016 15:00

I'm not wild about either. Charlotte is very common, solidly middle classy, it's a bit bleh for me. Layla has a different feel altogether. I know a couple of Leilas - they both have Middle East origins, and it's a Middle Eastern name, so relatively common there.

johans · 30/10/2016 15:21

pluto, i disagree with you... the original is leila!

johans · 30/10/2016 15:23

it originates from the arabic word meaning night.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 30/10/2016 15:45

I don't like it. I much prefer Layla

Andcake · 30/10/2016 15:55

Prefer Charlotte but would avoid due to popularity and possibility of being seen as a royalist
