Hello all, am just canvassing for people's thoughts on two names we had considered for baby boy.

Aethelred? Aethelwulf? Alfred?

Well that's three names, but I'm not keen on them. However, I have to say that Aethelred is a name that pops in to my head occasionally & I always wonder if I've dreamed it so I'm glad to hear it's real!

bandito · 28/10/2016 20:16

FWIW, I think all three sound daft. Your son will end up getting called Ethel or Fred. Still, it's your call.

Kitten3 · 28/10/2016 20:22

Not all 3 names! One of the other.

Ooh, hadn't considered the abbreviation to Ethel....that's a no then.

Alfred is fine, I think the others have passed their time. How about Edward? That is a good Anglo-Saxon name that has not dated.

Biscuitsneeded · 28/10/2016 22:39

How about Wilfred? I like Wilf!

user1477427207 · 28/10/2016 22:42

what about Arthur? that is a fine name for a boy.

sonlypuppyfat · 28/10/2016 22:43

The first two are fabulous names but no they've had their time and no one could live with them

IrenetheQuaint · 28/10/2016 22:44

Edmund
Harold
Oswald
Athelstan
Edgar
Ranulf

Can't say any of them really do it for me, though!

Underchipsandpeas · 28/10/2016 22:46

Hereward?

carmenta · 28/10/2016 22:49

Harold? Alaric? Edgar? Edwin?

JosephineMaynard · 28/10/2016 22:52

Alfred isn't to my taste, but is a name most people will be familiar with.

The other two are extremely dated. But it's almost certain they'd never be one of two or more in a class.

stonygreysoil · 29/10/2016 09:58

First two name suggested by OP are non runners. Alfred is fine, borderline fashionable.

Edward, Edgar, Edmund, Arthur, Harold all perfectly practical

SausageSoda · 29/10/2016 10:07

Alfred is fine but the other two are beyond awful - the poor child will spend his life explaining how to spell and pronounce his name and questioning why his parents inflicted him with it.

PlasticBertrand · 29/10/2016 10:31

I know a Caedmon which I think is rather splendid.

rainbow99 · 29/10/2016 10:33

First thing that popped into my head when I read the first two was Ethel I'm afraid

NameChange30 · 29/10/2016 10:37

Alfred is an "old man" name but they're fashionable at the moment. He could be Alfie or Fred(die) which are both nice.

The other two names are AWFUL.

KarenfromFinance · 29/10/2016 10:43

When I think of Aethelred I immediately think of 'Aethelred the Unready' - the nickname historians have given to King Aethelred. Un readiness isn't a brilliant quality.

WuTangFlan · 29/10/2016 10:47

Wulfric?

DesolateWaist · 29/10/2016 10:50

Of course post Brexit we will only be able to have Anglo Saxon names........

Maverickismywingman · 29/10/2016 10:52

Aleric is a good name but he may get called Ric.

Aart, Leofric like (lee-off-ric rather than Leo-fric)
Osbeorne (Osborn)

DoinItFine · 29/10/2016 10:54
Grin

That's what I was thinking, Desolate.

Although really the Anglo Saxons were EU migrants who came here under free movement rules.

Perhaps old British Celtic names is the way to go? Grin

Kitten3 · 29/10/2016 18:51

Thanks for your input people! I think we are thinking either Edmund or Edward. The original two appealed at the time- but some of the points above are very valid, so may give them a wide berth and save it for cat/fish names!

I like both Edmund and Edward, maybe a slight preference for Edmund because it's more unusual. Both are good characters in Jane Austen novels Wink
