George or Gregory?

Love George but it's definitely got a lot more popular recently and am not so keen on the royal connection. Other contender is Gregory, nn Greg which I wasn't sure about at first but have become pretty fond of. Hardly seems to be used with children at the moment, is there a reason for this that I'm overlooking?!

Guess I'll have to agree to disagree with the haters!

Yes that's the comment I get the most. Oh, you don't hear THAT very often nowadays . I love the character in House anyway

I was worried about the Gregs bakery association but am not in the UK. I love Greg on him but do sometimes call him Greggy!

mrsnec · 28/10/2016 12:44

Oh and mine is Gregory Jay. Hadn't heard of that DJ.

AmyInTheBoonies · 28/10/2016 13:54

George is nice enough but very middle of the road.

I like Gregor with Greg for a nickname.

DamePastel · 29/10/2016 01:41

I like Gregory. Greg is like Max, Ben, Sam to me, but more unusual.

George is ok but so popular right now.

Greedysquirrels · 29/10/2016 07:15

DamePastel thanks for another vote of confidence - good point putting it in a bracket with those other popular one syllable boys names. Just need to sort a middle name and I think we're convinced!

George. Gregory is very old fashioned.

KoalaDownUnder · 29/10/2016 07:17

George.

Gregory is very unappealing. To me, anyway. Greg is even worse.

Greedysquirrels · 01/11/2016 09:27

So for those who don't dislike Gregory, I could do with some middle name help. I'm thinking it needs to be one syllable and quite modern. Our surname is three syllables, as is Gregory so want to keep it short and sweet. Current thoughts are Jack, Jake or Luke but not 100% sold on any just yet. Was quite keen on James as a middle name but maybe too much with the Greg James link?

I prefer George, and Gregory is OK.

James is overused as a middle name but nice for a first name. Gregory Luke would work well.

Gregory Frank
Gregory Mark
Gregory Peter
Gregory Isaac
Gregory Miles
Gregory Saul
Gregory Vincent
Gregory Torin
Gregory David
Gregory Thomas

My shortlist for middle names was Fox, Hugo & Felix. Couldn't get any of those past DH! Jay is a dimminutive of DH's first name which is where that came from and Dd has a 3 syllable first name and 3 letter middle name too. But if I had my way he'd be Gregory Hugo.

Greedysquirrels · 02/11/2016 17:22

Interesting mrsnec as Hugo was a name I was keen on but couldn't get past DH. I feel there might be too many 'g' sounds for me with that combo anyway.

George is a strong name, I like it. I was put off Gregory by someone I knew who had a son of this name. She pronounced it Gregori with a peculiar uplift at the end. She was from Liverpool and it may be the normal pronunciation there but I found it very offputting.

MoonHare · 02/11/2016 23:08

Love the name Gregory. George is nice but it's very common. Gregory is more unusual but with the advantage of being something everyone is familiar with, it's solid while still being a little bit quirky. I know a 5 yr old Gregory who is such a lovely little boy.
Middle names - John, Joseph, Oliver, Simon.

mrsnec · 03/11/2016 04:42

We had the problem with 2 Y sounds in the end too but just went with it!

I am not a fan of James but DH did suggest it and it does go well so I think if you love it use it.

I also love Luke. I was trying to stay away from biblical names but found it too restricting.Would Lucas work?

We have a ridiculously common 2 syllable English surname and I think I was trying to be as adventureous as I could get away with!

Greedysquirrels · 03/11/2016 12:35

moonhare I love Oliver and hadn't thought of it as a possible middle name for Gregory but I really like it, thanks for the idea!

mrsnec I like the Lucas idea too but suspect DH would find it a bit left field!

Yes that is true I suppose! I'd also offer you some of my choices for first name alternatives to use as a middle name but they were all the same as Gregory or longer! I think you've had some good suggestions here.
