Just izzy?

Struggling with names for our daughter. We both like izzy but our families seem to think we should cal her Isabelle or Isabella and shorten it to izzy! Is just izzy that bad? Or will she get called names like dizzy izzy?

My friend called his little girl just Izzy, I think it's a bit silly, it will always be assumed it a shortening and I'm not a fan of calling someone just a shortened version of their name. What if they want to be a doctor or a lawyer or something? Pick something Izzy is short for and just always call her Izzy at home.

MissusDave · 23/10/2016 09:53

If you both like it surely it's up to you and not up to your family? Having said that, we have been thinking about a shorter name and I'd prefer to go with the longer version on the birth certificate etc. because it will give our child the choice. My thinking is that if our child is ever a CEO of a massive company or something they might want to use the longer version of their name if it sounds more professional, that kind of thing!
Overall I'd say go with your gut and what feels right - it's your child!

I think I'd have Isabelle on the birth certificate tbh. She can use that name when she's older if she wants to.

You and everyone else can call her Izzy though.

Finola1step · 23/10/2016 09:56

I have an Isobel but we mostly use Izzy.

I went for a longer version due to my own name. My name is a commonly shortened version of a longer, biblical name. I have spent the past 42 years explaining that yes, I know it is unusual but yes, my name really is the shortened version.

Hence giving my DD the option of the longer and shorter versions.

Oysterbabe · 23/10/2016 10:13

I would definitely go for Isabelle and give her some options. Izzy is not a CEO kind of name.

PoldarksBreeches · 23/10/2016 12:07

Not Izzy on its own.

FannyWincham · 23/10/2016 12:11

Please give your future adult daughter the option of Isabel / Isobel / Isabelle / Isabella.

insancerre · 23/10/2016 12:13

Give her the option
She won't always be a cute baby, some day she will be a grown up and she might want a grown up name

Enidblyton1 · 23/10/2016 12:17

You could put a longer name on her birth certificate (to give her options later), but tell everyone she is Izzy. Give Izzy as her name to nursery, school etc and everyone will always call her Izzy.

It's nice. I know a just izzie and she doesn't get any silly nicknames

The person above who isn't a fan of shortened names probably has kids called Tarquinius and Beatricia

PotteringAlong · 23/10/2016 13:20

Don't just call her Izzy.

Dilligufdarling · 23/10/2016 13:22

Izzy could be short for Elizabeth as well if you prefer?

BadEngleesh · 23/10/2016 13:23

I think Izzy on its own is really nice. I like Isabella/Isabel type names too but I don't see the point of having a longer name if you are only going to use the shortened version.

I'm sure an Izzy could be a CEO.

The only downside is that it's quite popular.

PotatoBread · 23/10/2016 13:25

I'd call her Izzy on a day to day basis but have a longer version on the BC.

MotherDuckSaid · 23/10/2016 19:17

Personally it's a bit of a non name , sorry. But if u both love it , thts what counts

lljkk · 23/10/2016 19:21

Isabel on BC won't prevent Dizzy Izzy or similar.

My dad has a name like... Tommie. Odd spelling & all. He's absolutely fine about his name, but he would have been equally fine being Thomas, iyswim.

Sophronia · 23/10/2016 22:35

Izzy short for Isabeau or Isadora?

jaxxyj · 23/10/2016 22:39

I know a Izzy who has just gone to uni and has changed her name to Isobel, it's good to give her options I think

nooka · 23/10/2016 22:48

Lots of children who went by cute diminutives as children use their more formal name as adults (including me and one of my sisters) , I'd not want to take away that choice from my children. Not because it might stop them from being a high court judge, but because they might not like to always have a cute name. The name is primarily for the child after all not the parent.

So no, I'd not use just Izzy on the BC. It doesn't seem like a proper name to me. Nice for a toddler but possibly not great for an adult.

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 23/10/2016 22:51

Izzy is a nice nn. But it sounds like a noise. It's not a proper name imo.

Pemba · 24/10/2016 04:02

Agree with pps, Izzy is a cute nickname, but Isabel/Isobel/Isabelle or Isabella are such beautiful full names, why on earth would you deprive her of having one of these as her official name?
