Have you read Harper Lee's second book? Haven't read it myself but saw comments online saying that Atticus Finch is racist in it.

Oh really Thedropbear 😬 Shit

I haven't finished Go set a watchman but it's a complicated picture in terms of Atticus and disputes about the authenticity of the manuscript;

I love Atticus and I think it's grown in popularity recently so not quite so unusual. I don't think middle names matter at and Wilder is as good as any.

I'd just make sure all your 'A' children have different middle initials otherwise it get confusing with post.

minipie · 20/10/2016 11:25

I find Atticus a bit try-hard too, sorry. I love Wilder though (as a middle name).

I also love Dashiell (nn Dash) and don't think of it as American.

I agree it is harder to find "different" names for boys that don't sound too out there or try-hard, it is easier for girls. I tend to think that the more unusual the name, the fewer syllables you can get away with iyswim? OR if it's an unusual long name, it needs a pretty normal nickname/short form.

Suggestions: Quentin, Dominic, Jude, Ivor, Cedric, Vincent, Eric, Guy, Dexter, Dylan...

I've read Go Set A Watchman, and Atticus is quite different in it. He is more patriarchical towards black people, viewing them as inferior, and childlike.

I believe the book was actually written first, and Harper Lee was then encouraged to write the earlier story. To Kill A Mockingbird is a better read (duh!) and conveys the themes about racism far more adeptly than Go Set A Watchman does.

It's interesting to read, and does add to the historical context in which the first was written, though.

Sugarpiehoneyeye · 20/10/2016 12:40

Atticus Wilbur is lovely, but Atticus Wilder is amazing OP. 😄

Pipilangstrumpf · 20/10/2016 13:27

Love the name Atticus! It's classic, cool and not overused. There are enough other Atticuses than Finch that I wouldn't connective he two necessarily.

Choose a middle name you love, it so rarely gets used anyway.

Pipilangstrumpf · 20/10/2016 13:28

Atticus Wilder sounds great!

DiegeticMuch · 21/10/2016 08:40

Most people would connect Atticus to TKaM. I could imagine someone like Victoria Beckham using it to prove that she's read a book. Quite try-hard.

Wilder is an immensely cool mn!

MotherDuckSaid · 21/10/2016 09:04

They r both 'go-to trendy names' where I live , but then so is Hugo, which is on my list 😁
The no nickname thing would irritate me, I like a name I can yell up th stairs with ease! But if u like long names and both of you love th name u shud so go for it.. I'm due any day and have no names we agree on and I 'settled' on my previous childs name and ended up changing it 18 months later because I cdnt bare to say it any longer 😅

GinIsIn · 21/10/2016 09:10

Have you actually read 'To Kill a Mockingbird', and the Little House books? Because that will be what people think. If you have and you like them, then why not, but it seems odd to go for an obviously Amercian literary name if you've not even read the books?

PuraVida · 21/10/2016 09:26

It's a bit 'fan of children's literature'

Ooh, I like Cassius. Cassius Wilder much better.

Ollycat · 21/10/2016 09:57

It does feel a bit Lit Crit!

Buntysoven · 22/10/2016 00:46

I just can't understand the love for the name Atticus. I'd be embarrassed to shout it actoss the park and it doesn't dhorten easily. It just sounds clunky and hard to me. Sorry OP.

SirChenjin · 22/10/2016 09:46

I think it's because the name is synonymous with a very admirable and noble character.

octoberfarm · 22/10/2016 12:05

Love Atticus but DH won't go for it either. Have you considered Casper, if you like Cassius?

daisypond · 22/10/2016 12:15

I knew an Atticus years ago at school in the '80s. I really dislike it, I'm afraid. I think it's pretentious, despite the great character that is in To Kill A Mockingbird. I don't know why that one grates more than other names after literary characters. Maybe because it's so distinctive. Wilder - I think of the Little House books. Laura Ingalls Wilder. I think it works as first name. I like it.

NotYoda · 22/10/2016 18:02

It is easier with girls' names. I agree with you

It's a personal thing, but I don't like names that impose too much of the parents ideals on a child. And I think Atticus does that. It's also a mouthful

NotYoda · 22/10/2016 18:06

Can I suggest some names?

Evan
Victor
Huw/Hugh
Raphael
Levi
