Would it be weird to use my nephew's middle name as a first name?

DP and I are ttc again (following a long hiatus, after 5 MCs). I know we're getting way ahead of ourselves, but we've been discussing names. Since I was first pregnant 6 years ago, we've planned on naming our son, if we have one, after my Granda. With his middle name being my paternal grandfather's name (which is a bit too unusual to use as a first name). In the interim, my sister has had a baby. My amazing nephew's middle name is also Granda's name. Would you be annoyed if your sibling used your child's middle name as their baby's first name? Thinking on it, I don't know any of my cousins' middle names. They are never used. So would we be 'stealing' their name if we used it?

Definitely not, use it, for sure.
Hope that you have good news very soon Kittens.🌺🌺🌺

If I have a boy it's very likely his first name will be the same as my nephew's middle name. I can't see anyone having a problem with it.

Of course its OK - the first person to have a kid doesn't get dibs on the family names! Quite a few of my cousins have the same names either as first or middle names.

My DD has my nieces middle name as her first name. It has never been an issue in the family.

That would be totally fine. Common practice in my family. Very best of luck to you both.

I'm your sister in this situation (not actual sister of course!).

I chose my dds middle name. In in fact wanted it to be her first name but DP wasn't keen on it but as it happened to also be his grandmother's name he agreed to it being dds middle name.

DP's sister is now pregnant and expecting a girl. She has told me that she is going to call her dd this name. As far as I'm concerned its fine, it's a family name. I'd only be put out if my dd had a more unusual non-family name as that would be quite odd imo.

We did exactly that. DS1's first name is the same as my nephew's middle name, although we actually call DS by a derivative. I didn't even think about it.

My sister's second name is also our younger cousin's first name so clearly it runs in the family, she too is usually known by a derivative.

Thanks for the lovely posts Flowers. Fingers crossed for good news soon. Good to know that in general people wouldn't mind, and some have in fact done the same thing. Yes running it by my sister is a good idea. Thinking on it, I don't think she will mind. Probably won't bring it up until I'm actually (hopefully) pregnant though. It might not happen, and if it does I might not have a boy, so there's probably no point in discussing it until it's actually relevant. Just so excited about my new nephew, and so excited at the thought of actually having one of my own, I'm getting a bit carried away Blush.

My brother and SIL did this, they gave their son my DS's middle name as a first name.

I admit I did think it was a little bit strange at first, but I'm totally used to it now.

KittensWithWeapons · 18/10/2016 21:40

Thanks Drama. Do you mind if I ask, was it a family name? Because I can imagine it being a bit strange if it wasn't, but if we both want to give our children our Granda's name, that's a bit less strange than using the same random name, I think!

It wasn't a family name, no.

I wouldn't have thought anything of it if it had been a grandparent's name.

I do like occasionally annoying my SIL by reminding her that she called her DS after mine Grin
