Would really appreciate opinions on our shortlist of boy's name. Also any other names you would consider similar please... :-)

The thing about Rex that puts me off is that it is, literally, majestic, which is fine on a very manly man, but I think it can therefore sit less well on a less manly man (yes, I'm thinking of you Rex! Sorry.) Also yes doggy connotations!
Louis is similarly regal but doesn't actually mean king and rather lovely. Also love Gabriel/Gabe (was our 2nd choice and only didn't have as not great with our surname). Also like Jonah.

MrsEricBana · 30/09/2016 09:57

NavyandWhite Ha ha re Major & Rebel - were you a Champion the Wonder Horse fan perchance?

Scattymere · 30/09/2016 09:58

Agree, love Rex. Move on to the 21st Century people, there've been fabulous chaps called Rex around for decades- its a MANS name, just found half a century ago, there were a few doggies called it too, so what??!

For what its worth OP- I have a Rex. Maybe my friends are just more creative/interesting that the few on here being boring barking on (!) about it but there was a genuine outpouring of love for his name both on the initial FB "heres my baby boy" post- and in real life. Sure a few people stay quiet after asking his name- but no name has universal appeal. I react like this when I hear another average, run of the mill name i.e.. Tom, William, Edward...yawn to me- its all just taste. Rex is lovely on a boy as a baby/toddler and will be on his as a grown man too.

MrsEricBana · 30/09/2016 10:01

I actually think just cut to the chase and go straight for Major - how fab would that be?

Notso · 30/09/2016 10:03

JONAH!
I adore this name but unfortunately it is the nn of one of DH's friends so he vetoed.

Loafingaround · 30/09/2016 10:03

MrsErica agree it is majestic why I love it, for any doubts about how it suits a man, look no further then the awesome Rex Harrison- masculine and handsome! I've loved Rex more since seeing it in print about Fearne called her boy it, it just looks great- simple, punchy, strong and individual. she is a bit bohemian etc but for any doubt of her taste and appeal- she has millions of followers on all her social media so she must make pretty decent/loved choices!

QueenJuggler · 30/09/2016 10:09

There's a Rex in our social circle. He's neither a Doberman nor a wanky estate agent - he's rather fit and manly, as well as very clever and successful.

It's a fab name, IMO

Louis is my favourite, with Rex a close second.

Not keen on Jonah at all, though it's very trendy ATM.

auntym · 30/09/2016 12:54

Thanks for all your opinions and suggestions, seems like there is no clear winner but Rex seems to be a no-no. Thinking cap back on!

DramaAlpaca · 30/09/2016 13:05

I like Louis best.

I don't like Rex at all.

n0ne · 30/09/2016 13:06

Love Louis!

BendydickCuminsnatch · 30/09/2016 13:07

Definitely Jonah!! Love it but can't use it as too similar to DS' name. Louis sounds a bit feeble and wet, I like Rex and don't really have any feelings about Gabe.

BagelDog · 30/09/2016 13:10

Have a Jonah! Love Gabe, Gethin, Idris, Rowan, Hugo, Jethro (DH's favourite...) Rhodri, Seth, Ianto, Reuben, kyffin, had a very long 'short'list!

BagelDog · 30/09/2016 13:12

Oh and not keen on Rex, used to like Lou's but one at nursery and he is a pest so has put me off... the Gabriel I know has a twin called Thomas and a baby brother called Zachary.

NickyEds · 30/09/2016 13:22

Louis. I don't think Rex is a dog's name though- it's a dinosaur name!

I quite fancied Louis for our dd before we knew she was a girl, it's a lovely name.

MrsGsnow18 · 30/09/2016 18:50

I love Jonah and Gabe! ( I have Jonah on my list and am thinking about adding Gabriel if I can get DH to agree)

Bellasima20 · 30/09/2016 20:19

Aww sad you've ruled out the truly fab Rex. There are just as many people who completely love it on here as don't... Those saying no are okay if safe types who don't want a name with any connotations at all, and just want to "fit in"... Is that what you want OP? More people in agreement that Jonah is the worst if the lot- which agree on!

PotatoBread · 30/09/2016 20:47

Laughing at some of the stereotyping going on here by some posters towards those that don't like the name Rex. I'm not boring, bland, need to get into the 21st Century or have a desperate need to 'fit in' - I just don't like the name Rex. The OP does and she asked for opinions. The world would be boring if we all like the same things.

Bellasima20 · 30/09/2016 21:36

"Stereotyping towards those who don't like the name Rex" oh dear , so sorry we've caused your fragile ego and hatred of a name such deep concern, have a glass of wine and chill my love Smile

Ohdofuckoffplease · 30/09/2016 21:36

Eh? If you don't like the name Rex, you're a "safe type" who only wants names with no connotations in order to 'fit in' Hmm?

"Move on to the 21st century people" is another corker. Oh shit, I'm so sorry, is... is it the 21st century now? Silly me! If I'd known that then of course, the op absolutely must name her son Rex. When I said otherwise, I was stupidly thinking we were still in the 20th century. Thank you for clearing up this whole sorry mess pps.

So just to clarify, does everyone in the 21st century have to love the name Rex or just the cool non conformists who don't choose names just to 'fit in'?

thisagain · 30/09/2016 21:46

Gabe/Gabriel but I have one. We mostly say Gabe.

Bellasima20 · 30/09/2016 21:46

Fuckoffplease no- we were only saying the "Oh dear! This is a doggy name! No way!" Brigade stems from a completely and utterly outdated, old fashioned boring association with names connected to pets that mostly originated at the start of the 20th century. So yeah- maybe it's time to move on from that- that is all Smile

PotatoBread · 30/09/2016 22:11

Bellisma - are you drunk or do you always over react? I don't have a fragile ego or a deep hatred of the name Rex Grin. Perhaps practice your own advice and 'chill'

Hope you reach a decision soon OP - as long as you and your DH love the name that's all that matters
