Pandra

So yes, we've been watching a lot of Time for School recently and there's a little girl called Pandra. I had never heard the name before but it is a Celtic name meaning 'chief dragon'.

I LOVE it. We are in England but have bona fide Celtic heritage. I am prepared for the fact that many people will assume that it's a typo for Pandora.

But...thoughts?

The name is legit

I doubt it.

I'm not convinced either. Dragon in Irish is just dragan, and though I don't speak Gaelic, it's often easy to understand via Irish - nathair sgiathach is literally 'snake with wings'. Possibly 'dragon' in Welsh too. A Pandra living in Scotland is no guarantee of 'legitimacy', and based on looking at Irish baby name websites, which are usually US-based and throw the word 'Celtic' around with absolutely no accuracy (appears to be synonymous with misty glens, leprechauns and stage Irish cliche), I wouldn't trust a word of them.

Pandra to me sounds more like a minor character in a post- Mists of Avalon fantasy novel.

It reminds me of Andy Pandy.

I think of a pan drawer
It's an industrial name.
Not pretty or cute whatsoever

OP, I'm curious to know when this lady in the north of Scotland lived, as I can find no mention of the name in any records (apart from one very recent use). I'm always keen to add to my database of Scottish names, so if this is one then I'd like to know more.

The only connection I can think of is to the surname Pendray which orginated in the north of Scotland from a place name, however the meaning is not remotely related to dragons.
