Very flouncy.

I prefer Octavian. It's slightly less grand.

I think that you would have to be confident that your child could always be part of a very upper class environment if you wanted to call your child one of these names. Unless it's a joke and I didn't get it.

I suppose he will be in an upperclass environment? Whatever that means.

I'd only use Octavius for an eighth child and only as a middle name!

AnyTheWiser · 25/09/2016 18:15

The upper classes don't call their children Octavius.
More like Frederick, John, Phillip and Charles.

You're clearly having a wind up.
Waiting for you to bring out mumsnets shittest name Ptolemy

I can picture an obese King Charles spaniel called Octavius.

Iliveinalighthousewiththeghost · 25/09/2016 18:16

Well that's what I mean. It's even too posh for the upper classes

Report
HunterIs · 25/09/2016 18:18

How am I having a wind up? I'm just asking for name opinions like anyone else does Confused I've even put up some others we like... I didn't realise you could ask for name advice, unless you were asking about top 10 names.

Not my cup of tea at all. I've seen way, way worse names suggested on here though!

If your social background will involve him going to a very poshe, very expensive boarding school then COOL! Go for it.

If he'll go to the local primary try and strike the balance between what you like and what won't mean he has the piss taken out of him for. Kids are cruel.

We know an Octavius.

Gets quite a lot of grief at school about his name.

No. It sounds like a baddy from a film. Ditto peregrine. I also agree that you're winding us up.

Uricon · 25/09/2016 18:26

Not for anyone born since 410 AD

All the 'upper class' people I know have absolutely bog standard traditional names.

teablanket · 25/09/2016 18:39

I actually really like it, OP.

MrsBungle · 25/09/2016 18:45

I don't think it's horrendous. It's a very big name for a person to pull off though. As others have said, it's better than a lot of the god-awful names suggested on this board! Peregrine is horrendous though!

Is. Is here since September 8 th and has had no name since then, poor child?

Report
HunterIs · 25/09/2016 19:34

Loads of people don't name their child within the first few weeks, that's why you have 6! No need to be funny about it

I don't think a three week old much cares whether it has a name or not!

I like Octavius best out of the names you've mentioned.

But it might be a hard name to carry off.

I love the name.

BUT

it's one of those 'wish I could use it but I really cant' names, imo.

Other names we considered (Peregrine was also on H's list):

Bertram
Casimir
Caspian

All in a similar category for me - fabulous names, but just not ones I could use (mostly due to potential reactions)

Compared to Peregrine and Egbert, Octavius is a fantastic name!

OP, it's clearly not a popular name. There's not much point arguing that. I mean, you asked for opinions, those are the opinions! Either ignore them and name your son Octavius, or choose something else if it bothers you.

I'd be a bit Confused if my dc dates an Octavius one day.
It reminds me of the viral clip of the 50 or so yr old man calling his Labrador to him, that was big last year. Can't remember the dogs name but Octavius would have worked well.
