I was just reading an old thread about Polly possibly being a nickname for Penelope, so there's that. Smile

I reaaaally like Caspar. Cool name.

ElmerTheElephant · 18/09/2016 09:01

How funny - apparently it's a nn for Mary!

en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Polly

I don't think anyone would get that though.

Wow, who would've known?!

Yeah, it's not particularly intuitive, is it?

Sophronia · 18/09/2016 11:47

Mary, Margaret, Josephine, Tabitha, Hector and Hugh are the ones I like best

MrsGsnow18 · 18/09/2016 18:45

Robyn or Edith for a girl.
Some of your girl's names I struggle to like: Polly in particular. I just like of parrots and Polly put the kettle on.

Boy's name, I think Caspar is the best from your list.

MrsGsnow18 · 18/09/2016 18:45

Just think of parrots*

SorenaJ · 18/09/2016 20:29

Favourite girls names: Ingrid, Alice, Margaret, Meredith, Josephine, Tabitha

Favourite boys names: Wilfred, Elijah, Hector

t4nut · 19/09/2016 14:59

Wish people would show some sense with names. What's cute on an ickle baby or precocious toddler does not sit well on a stroppy teenager and will not be appreciated by a young man or woman making their own way in the world.

Pipilangstrumpf · 19/09/2016 15:33

Favourites: Henrietta, Alice and Josephine and Rufus, Caspar and Rafferty

Dislike: Robyn, Faye, Ingrid and Wilfredm, Elijah and Hector (means to bully)

Pipilangstrumpf · 19/09/2016 15:38

t4nut, which of these names would not suit a teenager or young adult Confused? They're all proper, solid, well known names. I'd love to be named most of them (well, the female ones!)

On the other hand, I find a lot of the current cutesy names (like Albie, Archie, Poppy etc) not that suitable for adults.

CancellyMcChequeface · 19/09/2016 18:40

Favourites: Alice, Tabitha, Ingrid, Rufus, Caspar, Wilfred, Lawrence.
Dislike: Robyn, Merryn, Edith, Rafferty, Ronan, Hugh

None that I hate. But equally none I really like. They are all fine names.

FfionFlorist · 21/09/2016 13:51

Like Mary and Henrietta
Dislike Edith, Ingrid, Merryn...actually most of them...sorry

Like Hugh but prefer Hugo and Rufus
Dislike Casper and Rafferty

Thetruthfairy · 21/09/2016 22:19

Hi,
Op, we have the same taste in names it seems. Both of my boys names are on your list. The most popular ones it seems, phew. Thankfully they never get teased, and like you said, they are really not that unusual where I am from.
Girls names. I have an Edie. Love most of your list too. I would have a little Mary, Maggie or Josie in a heartbeat xx

mumsnit · 22/09/2016 14:51

Faves are Merryn and Lawrence (with Laurie as nn!)

I really like most of the names on your lists and would be very surprised at any teasing from any of your choices!

MotherDuckSaid · 22/09/2016 20:00

I Love Margot, Margaret (definitely due a comeback )Henrietta , faaye and Edith

Theodore and Lawrence

Brilliant list ! :)

Batteriesallgone · 22/09/2016 20:11

Wasn't Polly a maids name traditionally?

So 'Polly' would have been the acceptable nickname, on entering service, of quite a range of names considered above the station of common maids (presumably such as Mary)?

Might be wrong on that though.

BeastofCraggyIsland · 22/09/2016 20:36

Polly - no, parrot
Robyn - ok, not overly keen
Henrietta - horrible!
Ingrid - quite harsh sounding
Alice - bit insipid/dull
Margot - would shorten to Maggie
Mary - dull, plain
Faye - don't like the sound for some reason
Margaret - love the name Maggie, not keen on the long form
Edith - very old lady but Edie massively popular
Josephine - 'not tonight...!'
Meredith - ok
Merryn - ok
Tabitha - cat's name

Lawrence - no, awful
Rufus - dog's name/overly posh/wet human name
Caspar - quite like
Wilfred - awful
Elijah - love this, Eli is awesome name
Theodore - Theo ok, otherwise it's a chipmunk
Hector - no!
Rafferty - god no!
Ronan - Keating
Hugh - he's Rufus' best friend

I would go for Maggie and Eli(jah).
