So for some reason I've convinced myself that DD2's name should begin with M.

Madelaine would be my first choice but DH hates it.

Marie
Matilda
Mia
Maia
Mila
Mary

Are possible contenders but none seem quite right. Which is the best and any other ideas? Middle name will probably be Eloise.

I'm loving Meredith at the moment for my entirely fictional DD.

CourtJester · 15/09/2016 15:50

From your list i like Maia Eloise best :)

Can i also suggest Mariella?

(I have never heard of Maddy as a nn for Matilda, and would only ever think the full name Madeleine...However Mattie/Matty or Tilda are alternative to Tilly though)

Mary is lovely, also Margaret.

Marcia (pronounced either Marcey-a, or else Marsh-a)

Maud / Maude
Mila

I love Maud but it seems a bit marmite on here...

CruCru · 17/09/2016 13:22

I like:

Maud (but everyone else seems to hate it)
Mary
Marianne (but it would irritate me if it were pronounced Marian or Mary-Anne or shortened to Marie)
Miriam (shortened to Mimi)
Mariella

I don't like Matilda, not because it isn't nice but because I know load of them.

Tiffany101 · 17/09/2016 18:03

I also like Madelaine.
But Mia is a goo option too.

I'm sorry I absolutely hate Mary, it being the most overused female name ever, with literally millions of Marys and foreign versions of the name Mary having existed and existing since - when exactly? - literally getting on for forever. Mary just sounds so anti individual, like it's supposed to give the impression of someone who's extremely generic or something. An impression which isn't positive, in my opinion.

Mary is also a hugely significant name with Catholics, and in my experience as an ex Catholic a lot of Catholics have an intensely emotional response and attachment to the name. If you're not a Catholic, you might like to consider that. Your daughter Mary might well find that Catholic men make a beeline for her everywhere she goes. Perhaps not what you'd want if you're a devout member of another religion.

I like Matilda the most. I like how it's traditional - but not as traditional as to be massively overused like Mary has been. Mary also seems really plain, as there are so many fancy versions of the name of Jesus's mother, and Mary is the basic version of that.
