How many little Olivers do you know?

Really struggling to come up with a boy's name that DH and I agree on. I have always loved Oliver but am hugely put off by its popularity having topped the names stats yet again for 2015. Despite the popularity, I don't actually know any young Olivers so wondered if I just live in a bubble. Are there several per class at school these days?

I just counted 8 Olivers that are children of my Facebook friends.

pontificationcentral · 03/09/2016 17:49

How many boys born in the year, and how many registered as Oliver? That would give you a good start on how common it is to actually know lol. 1 in 20? Doubt it. 1 in 100? 1 in 1000? Being top of the list doesn't mean every other child is called Oliver when their are thousands and thousands of boy's names registered in a year.

When I named dd1 her name wasn't even in the top 100. Three months later a d-lister used it for her dd and it has been top 10 ever since. I have still only known another two girls with the same name in 16 years. I know two Olivers. Both are 14. And I met one more in a vaccination clinic last year who was 6 mos. so three total. I was also at school with one who must be around 45 now. Four. In my (considerable) lifetime lol.

A big fat zero...how strange.
Can't move for Judes and Dylans tho

0pti0na1 · 03/09/2016 19:05

I know one.

GoldPlatedBacon · 03/09/2016 19:14

My dd is 13 months. I've come across 6 Olivers now, I think, at various baby groups.

isitseptemberyet · 03/09/2016 19:51

i live in on the border of wales/ england and have children in nurseries and schools, i dont know any, but think its a lovely name :)

plimsolls · 03/09/2016 19:54

I know one a few months old and one a few weeks old. But I know LOADS of kids so that proportion of 2 is tiny.

pullthecracker · 03/09/2016 19:55

I know 6 amongst my friends children

allthecarbs · 03/09/2016 19:57

I know 1.

I've heard it being called a lit though.

If you like the name go for it. I've got 2 kids with a top 5 name and I can honestly say it's never affected us.

PandasRock · 03/09/2016 20:00

I know 5 Olivers - oldest is 11, youngest is a newborn - and I don't know a huge amount of children. One is in dd1's class, 2 are in dd2's class, and 2 are children of friends.

Duckyneedsaclean · 03/09/2016 20:04

In 2015, there were 697,852 live births in England and Wales, and 6,941 of those were named Oliver. So about 1% total, roughly 2% of boys.

Bluesand1 · 03/09/2016 20:26

2 Olivers and an Ollie at our nursery

SteviebunsBottrittrundle · 03/09/2016 20:35

How many do I actually know? Just two actually - one is a toddler and the other is an adult.

That said, I have met a few more children and babies called Oliver but just wouldn't say I know them.

It is a popular name I think, but it wouldn't necessarily put me off if I really loved it.

mumgointhroughtorture · 03/09/2016 20:44

My Son Is Jack and when he was at Primary it was the number 1 name for boys for a few years and yet there was only 2 in his whole school . I rarely hear Jack here. It may just depend on the area you live. You could decide to call him something at number 100 on the list and there be another 2 in his class once he starts school and no Olivers ... Don't let it put you off .

MrsJoeyMaynard · 03/09/2016 21:08

It's so weird isn't it. Where are all of these Olivers hiding?!

Ducky's post at 20:04 has the answer there. If roughly 1% of all babies born in 2015 are Oliver's - only 1 in every 100 babies, or 1 in every 50 baby boys nationwide - then it's not surprising that most people only know a couple.

It'd be more common to have a typical school class of 30 kids with no Oliver's at all, than a school class with 2 or more Oliver's, based on that.

Sophronia · 04/09/2016 00:08

I know lots, the oldest is 26 and the youngest is 2.

DustyCropHopper · 04/09/2016 01:38

I have an Oliver and in his school (he is in Year 4) there is only 2 in 300 children. I fully expected him to be in a class with at least one other but nope. I have no idea where all these Oliver's are hiding.

MotherOfROC · 04/09/2016 01:46

Just one my DS 10

Ankleswingers · 04/09/2016 02:03

None at all

Moosa · 08/09/2016 21:32

I know lots. DD (11) had three in her class, DS (8) has one.

Ryooki · 08/09/2016 21:38

I know 3, all under age 8!

katemess12 · 08/09/2016 21:44

The only Olivers I know are 25 (my age) and about 17.

I don't know any little ones, but I don't actually know too many baby or toddler boys. Everyone seems to be having girls around me!

HeadDreamer · 08/09/2016 21:46

Three young ones, and one slightly older. It's quite popular.

HeadDreamer · 08/09/2016 21:47

Actually it's 4, there is also one on DC's class. She's in year 1. All the Oliver's are 5 or under.

Landoni112 · 08/09/2016 21:47

Loads and loads and loads
