Amy, Abigail or Gemma?

Opinions, please!

Would most likely have middle name of Cerys.

I think Jemima is nicer than Gemma. Gemma is not a bad name though.

Don't like Amy or Gemma. Both sound very outdated to me, and not ready for a comeback yet. All of the Amys and Gemmas I know were born in the 80s or early 90s.

Abigail is lovely. I have never known one to go by Gail, but they have all be nicknamed Abby.

So Abigail is my favourite.

Abigail Cerys. Abby is sweet.

I like Gemma but don't listen to me. I like Sharon.

Jane Eyre put me of Abigail and I really don't like Abi. I don't mind Gail.

Amy is nice but dull

My Dd (aged 9) is Gemma! Amy was also on our shortlist, but I liked that Gemma isn't commonly used. I'm surprised when people think of it as "chavvy" - it's Italian for "jewel", and Dd is precious!

Amy is still reasonably popular. I know several girls aged 6-11 named Amy. It goes well with Matthew and Lucy too. All three names are sort of classic/timeless.

Abigail is nice too.

Gemma is nice but of its time (80s)

What about Anna or Charlotte?

I would love Cerys as a first name, but my husband doesn't, so we have to compromise!

Snazzarooney I know a baby Anna already (and also my supervisor's name). Charlotte I do like but not sure if it's more common now due to Princess Charlotte! Not that it really matters at the end of the day...

Abigail I always think of as a "maid's" name - not sure why! But it does always seem to be the name of the maid rather than the lady of the house in historical dramas! I prefer Amy.

It literally means maid. Abigail in the bible described herself to King David as a 'handmaid' and it was/is used to as slang for a maid throughout the regency period. Austen uses it.

I don't mena Austen, I mean Charlotte Bronte. Still, same period.

Gemma is my favourite. So pretty! Also quite international/classic, which is always a factor I like. Abigail is too current, and both Abigail and Amy feel a bit overused at the moment.

They're all really dated in my opinion. Gemma = 80's. Amy = 90's. Abigail = early 2000's.

I like Gemma the best (and I know 2 young Gemmas - one is 10 and the other is 7). That said, it probably does sound the most dated out of the three.

I like Amy, never been keen on Abigail but it's a name that will grow well with her.

How about Zoe? I think of that as being a similar style but timeless.

Ahh, you might decide only when you meet your baby! We were undecided between Amy and Gemma until dd was born. They whisked her off to SCBU straight away with dh following. He decided she looked more like a Gemma so told the staff that was her name! She suits it.

Amy or Gemma would be my choices.

I don't know why people get stuck on the idea of Abigail being a maid's name. It's classless these days.

Amy is lovely. It doesn't feel dated yet I don't know many under 12.

I don't think that matters necessarily, and if you know about it before naming her then it's deliberate so could even be a nice story behind her name.

I know an Abigail who is never shortened, and if you did she would tell you that her name is Abigail not what you have called her.

Hebrew meaning, father's joy, is lovely, if you are into that sort of thing.

Love the name Amy. I also love the name Gemma but agree it's a bit 80's. Still very pretty though. Not at all keen on Abigail. I don't think it's nice if pretty at all.
