Felix

What are everyone's thought on the name Felix? As per previous threads we are having a little brother to Theodore (Ted/Teddy) so looking for a name that compliments his. Tobias had been top runner for a while, but I've realised I'm not going to get over the 'twee' factor of Teddy and Toby.

We are now really considering Felix, I absolutely love the sound of the name and it's meaning. Cat connection doesn't really bother me. Just wondering tonight if it would sound a bit dated in a few years? I know it's a biblical name but not sure if it's going to go the same way as Oscar / Archie etc. Also does it still sound right on an adult? We have lived in Germany for the last four years so I'm not sure if I'm being influenced by the naming trends here and I'll regret it when we move back to the UK later this year.

Sorry for the ramble! Only other real consideration is Arthur. Thanks all!

This is number one on my list. OH likes it but is not 100% convinced yet.

It definitely feels quite middle-class (which we are), but I wouldn't say it's "wet", in my opinion. I imagine it belonging to a strong but gentle man. Which is how I'd love my son to be!

Cats like Felix, like Felix!

dodi1978 · 07/09/2016 13:59

That will probably be our name for DS, due in four weeks time :-)

A midwife suggested it, and I loved it from the start. It goes well with Oscar (DS1), and works both in English and in German (my native language).

Ok, my husband's and my mother in law's first reaction was "cat food", but I think they're coming round to it....

In other words: I like it! When are you due?

eatsleephockeyrepeat · 07/09/2016 14:05

Love it! It's my brother's middle name, and that was back in the 80s so parents were ahead of their time :P I put it forward for our DS, but annoyingly DH's cousin had already bagged it for himself some 15 years ago. Can't have two that close in the family apparently. Damn!!

SteviebunsBottrittrundle · 07/09/2016 14:39

I love it! And I have met an adult Felix. I think he was in his forties and that was about 15 years ago, so don't think it will date badly.

CyrilSneer30 · 07/09/2016 19:02

Thanks for all the replies everyone! Dodi I'm not due until 29th December so still keeping a (reluctant) open mind regarding names, fairly sure we're set on Felix now. I get 'the feeling' whenever I say the name so I know it's right, exactly the same as when we were having Theodore. It really appeals to me that it travels so well, especially as we hope to return to Germany as soon as we get the chance to Smile just gutted he won't be born here to be honest!

Felix is a lovely name. There are a few around but it really doesn't seem to be trending in the way that Toby/Oscar/Arthur are.

If it's 95th at the moment, at least you'll know that for your son's year he won't meet many others even if it does rise in a few years' time.

StrongTeaHotShower · 07/09/2016 19:44

Love it but I've never met a man, least of all Dp who liked it! Confused

AButterflyLightsBesideUs · 11/09/2016 07:18

Love it. Seriously considering it for my DS due in a few months. DH says he's not against it, but sees it more as a middle name because he can't work out how you shorten it? DD's name is 2 syllables and doesn't shorten either though. Any Felix shortenings I have overlooked?

CyrilSneer30 · 11/09/2016 07:42

StrongTea I know what you mean, I'm amazed I've managed to get DH on board!

AButterflyLightsBesideUs we spoke about this too, to be honest I think it's such a lovely name it doesn't need to be shortened! But I've come across a few - Fee, Lix (not my fave Shock) and my personal favourite, Fox. But I think ours will probably end up being Felix most of the time, unless a NN happens naturally.

Randytortoise must have been really lucky to have so many in her school- only about 550-600 a year over the last 10 years.

AButterflyLightsBesideUs · 11/09/2016 08:02

Tbf cyril, DD generally ended up as monkey, kitten (kitty/kittycat), pops or puppy (her choice!), none of which have anything to do with her name so I'm not 100% sure why this concerns him! Fox is quite cool though.

IslaMann · 11/09/2016 08:07

I love it. It was in our top 3 list if we had a boy.

Twooter · 11/09/2016 08:13

Love it.

Smitten1981 · 11/09/2016 08:17

I have a Felix, I chose it thinking it was an uncommon name but I've met about 10 others around the same age since so I was wrong there! Still love it though.

Smitten1981 · 11/09/2016 08:19

Nickname wise, we call him Feefs.

BertrandRussell · 11/09/2016 13:15

"Nickname wise, we call him Feefs"

Not absolutely sure that's going to carry on into the teenage years.........Grin

Smitten1981 · 11/09/2016 18:01

Well probably not, but he's two at the moment so it's fine. Hmm

JinkxMonsoon · 11/09/2016 18:05

I've never thought of shortening my Felix's name. He has a whole host of nicknames but none have anything to do with his name Grin
