Jack and John

Quick question - if someone already had a son called John, would you think it odd if they called a new baby boy Jack?

Yes. It would be like having a Lizzie and a Betsy.

MrsBungle · 01/09/2016 20:46

Personally, yes, I would because jack is a nickname for John as far as I am aware.

allegretto · 01/09/2016 20:47

Odd as to me they are basically the same name but I know people use Jack as a proper name so you could I suppose.

mrschatty · 01/09/2016 20:47

Yeah it's the same. My uncle goes by Jack OR John depending on who he's speaking to

Jeannekepis · 01/09/2016 20:50

I think, perhaps incorrectly, that this is generational. Older people would see it as odd but as time has passed they have become two distinct names .

Saying that, I wouldn't do it. How about James as a similar alternative?

NoTractorsAtTheTable · 01/09/2016 20:51

Yes - although I do know sisters called Catherine and Katie, so I suppose it does happen!

DubiousCredentials · 01/09/2016 20:55

I think it's a nice pairing. My dad was called John and I have never heard of Jack being a nickname for John.

Blackpoollassy · 01/09/2016 21:00

Jack is definitely the nn for John so it would be a bit odd

DamnGood314 · 01/09/2016 21:01

You can't!
Even, say, Seán and Jack would make me think 'doh'

Sorry.

Yes, they are the same name. But then I remember a thread about brothers called Harry and Henry facepalm

Nonameyet1 · 01/09/2016 21:12

It's ok, for me too many Js!

MrsJoeyMaynard · 01/09/2016 21:51

Thanks all.

DH has been trying to convince me that this would be totally fine and not odd at all, but I was very dubious about that.

villainousbroodmare · 01/09/2016 22:25

No. Same name.

Alisvolatpropiis · 01/09/2016 22:26

Your husband is very wrong.

Henry and Harry would be similarly foolish.

KanyesVest · 01/09/2016 22:30

I know sisters who have the same name in different languages Confused Definitely no to Jack and John being brothers.

wobblywonderwoman · 01/09/2016 22:33

John and Paul

John and Peter

James - as mentioned would be perfect

Mybeardeddragonjustdied2016 · 01/09/2016 22:33

My ex mil was called Gwendolynn. Her sister was Lynn. Fil chose the names.

Says loads.

HoratioNightboy · 01/09/2016 22:34

My mum always said that Jack was a pet form of James, from Jacobus, I suppose, so it often seems odd to me that people associate it with John. I wouldn't bat an eyelid at siblings with these two names but I realise I'm vastly in the minority.

RiverTam · 01/09/2016 22:36

Well, given that Mr Maynard was a John nn Jack, I think he absolutely has to now to your better judgement, no? Grin

RiverTam · 01/09/2016 22:36

Bow to

HarrietVane99 · 01/09/2016 22:37

Mrs Joey Maynard, you must recall that your husband Dr Maynard was a John who was always known as Jack! I think there'd be far too much scope for confusion, with people thinking John was Jack, or that Jack was really John.

HarrietVane99 · 01/09/2016 22:38

X post, River Tam!

FATEdestiny · 01/09/2016 22:39

If you like traditional names, I think David is in need of a revival. It seems to have lost its main-stream status. Dave or Davey nicknames, fantastic name.

Heratnumber7 · 01/09/2016 22:39

I know someone called Gemma who called her DD Emma. Weird.
