I think people would assume it was Violin-a, so you'd be constantly correcting people.

How about Evelina, Silvia, Victoria, Valeria, or just Lina or Lia?

TodaysAGoodDay · 01/09/2016 16:41

Violena sounds like some sort of window cleaner, but Violet/Violetta is lovely.

Titflaps · 01/09/2016 16:44

Trumpetta. Thats nice and musical. Guitarina? Flutette?

No. Not Violina. It reads like a name of a contraceptive pill. Viola is ok.

Puremince · 01/09/2016 17:37

Violina with a non-British surname will work well. It sounds pretty.

SorenaJ · 01/09/2016 18:17

First I didn't like it, but then when I heard where you were from, and how it was pronounced, it grew on me, and now I actually quite like Violina :)

sparklydiamond · 01/09/2016 18:34

Her surname will be after her father. We want to call her Violina Maria SokolovSmile

*Hahahahahahha you might as well call her Chardonnay and be done with it. Sorry but you asked!8

Hmm
florascotianew · 01/09/2016 18:47

That's a lovely name. This will sound incredibly sententious, but am old and can remember days when available names - especially in Scotland - were severely limited. My name reflects on my father's and grandfathers' ancestors. I don't mind at all - am just saying. But nowadays, the sooner we all accept/learn to understand how 'other' naming styles work, the better. Aything else would be to place so many new babies/infants with 'new' names at a disadvantage, and I'm sure that no person of goodwill want that.

Sleepybeanbump · 01/09/2016 18:48

If I thought your family was of British descent, I'd say it sounded silly. I came on here to say so. However if I met you or your daughter in real life and realised that the name was Eastern European, I'd immediately like and just think 'how pretty'.

Go for it!

monkeygone · 01/09/2016 18:54

I think it's fine. I've seen/heard some much "weirder" Eastern European names, and nobody cares. It's a foreign name, no problem.

Shadowboy · 01/09/2016 18:54

I like it. I think the combination of names first, middle and surname works- rolls off the tongue. My mother is Ukrainian anyway so I can 'hear' how it should sound.

TooDamnSarky · 01/09/2016 18:55

I like it!
Put with the surname it is lovely :)

florascotianew · 01/09/2016 18:55

Oh, OP, if uou love it, use it. People will get used to it. Long ago, I knew a really lovely woman from the borders of Ukraine. Her name was Valeria - in English, that was Valerie, of course. But she was so impressive, and did so much to help others, that no-one dared shorten her namew ithout permission to 'Val' or 'Vee'; Instead, she was always (her choice) 'Valerie'. She deserved it!

AnnieOnAMapleLeaf · 01/09/2016 18:56

I think it's beautiful, OP. Not everyone needs to be Lilly or Olivia.

TheDowagerCuntess · 01/09/2016 18:59

Go for it OP, it's a grower.

People will very quickly get used to it, and it has a lovely sound.

ConkerTriumphant · 01/09/2016 19:00

I think it's lovely

QueenLizIII · 01/09/2016 19:03

As soon as I saw it, I thought the way Viola is pronounced and assumed it was vee-oh-lee-na.

Which it is.

QueenLizIII · 01/09/2016 19:04

Violina Maria Sokolov

That is beautiful.

Dont listen to everyone else.

JasperDamerel · 01/09/2016 22:10

What QueenLiz said.

Frazzled2207 · 01/09/2016 22:20

I think it's lovely and totally acceptable for a baby with eastern european heritage.

If her parents were english though there'd probably be a few raised eyebrows.

Frazzled2207 · 01/09/2016 22:22

Eg violina jones/davies/brown sounds odd but with your surname is perfect

villainousbroodmare · 01/09/2016 22:24

Lovely with your surname. I had the correct pronunciation in my head too. Sweet.

sparklydiamond · 01/09/2016 23:21

Thank you for all of your positive comments Grin the comments have made us love it even more!

I can understand that it would probably look strange for an English child, I just hope the name is accepted as well as what it has been on here. (Well by most people). I assume many people will also react similar to the more negative comments. But I love it so who cares!

I'm ok with having to tell people how to pronounce and about our background and why it is so special and relevant for us. It will make me proud to tell people it is a name that originates and represents both our home countries.

Once again, thanks for all your opinions. GrinSmile
