Rhyll

Hello! Trying to work out whether this name works for a girl. It's a Welsh name, and DH is Welsh so it sounds lovely when he says it but not sure how it will work in Glasgow where we live.

It immediately makes me think of Rhyl sun centre (north wales big swimming pool with slides etc - not sure if it still exists but used to be very popular). You may get a lot of "like the sun centre?" comments which could get annoying.

Other than that I'm not sure it works well in the Glasgow accent tbh.

I thought you meant after the town when I saw the thread title. Is it pronounced differently?

I'd be a little concerned that outside of Wales people might just think she was conceived in Rhyl as it's not such a well known name as Sian, Rhiannon, Seren etc

I'm Welsh and I've never met anyone with the name "Rhyll". Maybe it's more common in north and west wales.

I'm not a fan, I'd also assume they were named after the town.

(Rhyl is not actually a Welsh name. It's the name of a Welsh town. Bit like saying Leeds is an English name)

And 'Rhyll' would be pronounced very differently and is not a Welsh name in any form - not even a town.

Have a rethink.

Sorry, I don't think it works as a child's name at all.

I thought about it for my youngest but realised he'd be laughed at. I'm so glad I didn't do that to little Llandudno.

Erm, no. I believe the Welsh word for 'fart' is 'rhech' and the 'ch' and 'll' sounds in Welsh sound similar so that is what the name 'Rhyll' would make me think of - a fart... Although as previous posters have said, 'Rhyll' is not a Welsh name and just looks like the town 'Rhyl' spelt incorrectly. And why would anybody want to name their child after that godforsaken place? OP, there are so many lovely Welsh names, I implore you don't do it!

Call it Rhyw, I hear that's a nice Welsh name. Or Pidlan. Or Bron Mawr.

A friend is called Colwyn and I really like that.

I have never heard of it. I agree 99% of Welsh people would think of Rhyl. Also the LL at the end would make it difficult for a lot of people to pronounce. There are so many beautiful Welsh names for a girl.

Can you give an example of how you think it should be pronouced? A Welsh speaker once told me that "ll" at the end of a word or after a vowel was pronounced like an "f", which, if correct, would suggest your name is pronounced a bit like "Riff". I'm not sure that's what you had in mind!

(Hopefully a Welsh speaker can confirm whether this final LL=F thing is correct or not)

I'm Welsh and have never heard of a 'Rhyll'.

RE: Correct pronounciation: the 'll' at the end would be pronounced as a 'clhhhh' which is a really hard sound for some other nations to replicate! I would say it like 'Rhilccchh' sort of thing.
