Sophia or Sofia?

Which spelling do you prefer? I do like the Sophia version more, however I hate it shortened to'soph'. Would Sofia still get soph? Would there be a less of a chance of Soph creeping in with this spelling?

It'll get shortened however it's spelt. I'd go with Sophia as everyone would automatically spell it that way

I prefer the Sofia spelling, but either way you just say you use her full name or nn fia/Phia whatever it is you want.

If you're Spanish go for Sofia. Otherwise Sophia.

Soph is a cute nickname. Nicknames are quite posh though. They always have nicknames!

Sophie is nicer….

I have a Sofia but my family is Italian which is why I chose that spelling. She has never been called Soph, we shorten it to Fia.

I prefer Sofia it's more interesting and unusual but then I like Mediterranean names in general, both my girls have Spanish names despite being half Scottish half Greek.

I think they are both beautiful!! But you may end up with Soph or Sophie either way..... However i had a friend called Sophia in school and no one ever shortened her name. I think really the name is short enough to avoid nicknames.

Just go with whichever you prefer. We went with ph rather than f because we had never known any Sophias and figured that folk would just think it was ph because of the traditional UK way of spelling Sophie. Of course the name rocketed in popularity and now we know a few, all the ones we know are with a ph but if you have a preference just go with it!

I think since the sound is the same the spelling won't really influence NNs.
Fia is a nice shortened version of Sofia though.
On paper I actually would favour Sophia though as I think Sofia looks quite like sofa when I look quickly. ( a very silly reason I know!)

I have an 11 year old Sofia, one of the reasons we chose that spelling is because I'm not a huge fan of Sophie and of Soph. She gets called Fia sometimes but only by family. Her name has never been shortened by any of her friends, it has been spelled Sophia the odd time but she sorts that out herself.

We decided to with the 'Sofia' spelling with DD (Mediterranean background) but then in my sleep deprived post-partum haze I was adamant it wouldn't suit her and she ended up nameless for 24hrs.

Cause sometimes it depends on the second name like

Sophia Rose is better sounding than Sophie Rose,

Something like that

I'll go for Sophia Lily,

For me classy than the other one.

"Soph" will happen either way.

You could go left field and insist Sophia was pronounced in the Germanic way "soff-igh-ah". Sophia Gardens in Cardiff is pronounced as such.
