There's a pretty rough area called the Vale of Leven, usually referred to as the Vale- kind of negative connotations in the west of Scotland.

I'd assume it was pronounced like "Valley", as I've met Italian "Valli"s and would assume this was a variation.

It means "OK" in Spanish (Bal-lay). It's not briliant but it's, er, OK. Not keen on the Vale spelling.

fluent - If it's supposed to be pronounced Veil, I'd spell it "Veil". If the meaning behind the name is intended to be "vale" - as in "...of Glamorgan" - I'd spell it Vale. But I am not a fan of either - falls into the "words not names" category for me.

FWIW I used to have a (female) friend whose name was Vail. Pronounced to rhyme with bail. Pretty and unusual.
