Our gorgeous little boy arrived on Wed and is still nameless - really need to make a decision! We're pretty much down to Arlo or Fox - which do you prefer and why?

My concern is that Arlo is about to become mega popular, though on a par with what I'm not sure...

Thanks!

All the Wolf haters I'm feeling offended. I had a great uncle Wolf, shortened from Wolfgang - hardly a recently discovered name.

If I heard it on the playground I'd probably assume Bear was an Edward or Theodore (assuming the family were British).

Back to Fox and Arlo. I like both! (Helpful)

Stellabystarlight · 22/08/2016 19:50

Of the choice I would add to the consensus that Arlo is least bad.

I do love Mulder though.

maryellie · 22/08/2016 19:52

Arlo 100% ... Imagine seeing Fox written a CV

DeltaSunrise · 22/08/2016 20:45

I know 2 little Arlo's. I like it.

I really like Fox but not sure I'd be brave enough to use it so Arlo from me.

DramaAlpaca · 22/08/2016 22:02

Arlo.

It's not my style, but it's way better than Fox.

HerdsOfWilderbeest · 22/08/2016 22:08

absolutely hate foxes. Scavenging bastards. Their screaming mating is horrific.

Arlo much better.

fruitboxjury · 22/08/2016 22:13

Op I get that you don't appreciate the criticism of Fox as a name, but it would be helpful to think of how you will feel as a mum when the same criticism and comments happen in real life.

Because it will happen, and he will hate his name because of it.

I was pipped to the post by a pp, but likewise he will never live down the awful fox song

fruitboxjury · 22/08/2016 22:16

Come to think of it, I wonder if Tiger Woods' parents had much support for their choice of name in the early days, or Bear Grylls'?

BikeRunSki · 22/08/2016 22:17

I actually really like Arlo, but I've always been a bit of an old hippy. (Arlo Guthrie, 60s protest singer).

Bear Ghrylls' given name is Edward.

LowAMH · 22/08/2016 22:26

Lol at being in SW London so not bothered about having unusual name - yeah cause names there are so different to anywhere else Grin

Do your DS a favour and call him Arlo. Fox is honestly quite bad.

RedLarvaYellowLarva · 22/08/2016 22:28

Fox. Love it!

OP, this is not the forum for asking about names if you like anything at all unusual. Fox is cool. Do it!

therootoftheroot · 22/08/2016 22:30

tiger woods is actually called Eldrick Tont
tiger is a nickname

bear grylls is edward michael

they have proper names and then a nickname

SpeakNoWords · 22/08/2016 22:30

Tiger is a nickname too, although his given name is Eldrick which is equally unusual.

I think by the time a baby born today is a young adult we will be quite used to all kinds of interesting and different names. I loved that YouTube video, yet it wouldn't put me off naming my child Fox if I really liked it. I don't know why it would be something that would cause them a problem in the future.

GoLightlyHollie · 22/08/2016 22:45

I'm in SW London too and have never heard of either name. I'll have to keep my ears open on Northcote Road.
I personally think Fox is a bit mean, the poor child is going to be stuck with that name for ever. As someone whose parents went a bit all out with my name, I would go with Arlo.
And congratulations on your new little one.

Sophronia · 22/08/2016 23:22

Not keen on either. Arlo is trendy and will date, and Fox is just terrible.

purplefox · 22/08/2016 23:30

I've seen so many Foxes recently, it's always been a bit meh.

Ladybird08 · 22/08/2016 23:41

I really like Fox. Go for it x

reup · 22/08/2016 23:43

Arlo sounds like a backwoods Kentucky character - but then he could marry one of the -Mae names that are very popular that also sound very redneck.

It would be entertaining to have a Fox when you ask someone to do something for him you could say it's for Foxs sake.

SuburbanRhonda · 22/08/2016 23:49

That's it, reup!

Arlo sounds like the name of a slack-jawed yokel.

Though obviously it's better than Fox.

Bellyrub1980 · 22/08/2016 23:54

I actually really like Fox. My DP would never allow it (he would share the views expressed already by PP) but I think it's a strong, punchy, no nonsense sounding name. But then I'm a big fan of names derived from nature esp trees and flowers. Animals are a bit harder to pull off, I think Fox is one of the better ones.

AmysTiara · 23/08/2016 00:05

I like Arlo.

I'm not a fan of Fox but I do know one and his name doesn't stand out any more. It's just him.

PointlessUsername · 23/08/2016 00:09

I likeep Arlo.
