Do you like it or not?

OP posts:

Fauve is awful, reminds me of mauve. It's not really a name, is it?

candykane25 · 19/08/2016 20:48

Fawn is better.

Just5minswithDacre · 19/08/2016 20:50

Honestly? Fey, pretentious and the association isn't great.

Plus, for some reason, it sounds as though it should be an awful boy's name.

lljkk · 19/08/2016 21:16

we can get used to anything... but there are nicer names. That's all. There are even very nice weird names you could choose instead.

Fauve
Nannawifeofbaldr · 19/08/2016 22:55

It is a real name. Older MNers may remember either the film/book "Mistral's Daughter" - the eponymous heroine was called Fauve.

OP while it's not to my taste, if you and your DP like it, go for it.

I have a very rare, constantly need to spell it type name - it's not that big a deal.

StopMakingMeLogOn · 19/08/2016 22:58

Loved Mistral's Daughter and therefore have a fondness for Fauve.

I'd like to re read all the Judith Krantz novels but I'm scared I'll be disappointed now I'm not a teenager, like I was when I re read Lace!

Enkopkaffetak · 20/08/2016 01:21

Love it..

VioletBam · 20/08/2016 01:24

I thought it was pronounced to rhyme with Mauve! I think you'd get that a lot. And I don't say Mauve to rhyme with clove.

BathshuaSpooner · 20/08/2016 01:35

I love it, think it is very unusual and pretty, I have met one Fauve in my life and she was gorgeous.

TheRealAdaLovelace · 20/08/2016 01:41

There was a young baby called Fauve,
Whose mother dressed her in mauve,

Honestly it's dreadful. Whoever said 'fey and pretentious' I agree

badtime · 20/08/2016 16:37

It reminds me of Mistral's Daughter as well.

SerenDippitee · 20/08/2016 17:10

Given that I know what it means, no, I'm not keen.

TheGirlOnTheLanding · 20/08/2016 17:18

I don't hate it, but it does sound like it's from a romantic novel.

Confused by previous poster querying pronunciation though - for me, mauve and clove (and fauve) all rhyme. How do you pronounce mauve?

Jooni · 20/08/2016 18:12

Beast that was my first association too! A friend has an adorable Fauve called Clouseau Smile

But as a name - no, sorry, don't like it. Just not an attractive sound IMO, not worth the hassle.

PotteringAlong · 20/08/2016 18:15

Not for me

Sandyknickers · 20/08/2016 18:18

I don't think any name is pretentious, saying so is insinuating a baby is pretending above their station because of their name, what bullshit. If you like it go for it. fauve will grow into it, difficult names can be a blessing, think Johnny cash a boy named sue.

wigglesrock · 20/08/2016 18:32

TheGirlOnTheLanding I say mauve like maw (to rhyme with law) ve.

YvaineStormhold · 20/08/2016 18:35

What does it mean?

Just5minswithDacre · 20/08/2016 18:36

Only if the baby named itself sandy Wink

WindPowerRanger · 20/08/2016 18:47

Fauve means wild animal in French. That's enough to put me off, even though it also means tawny. Or beige.

gettingtherequickly · 20/08/2016 18:51

I love it, and I usually dislike "unusual" names, to be fair I'm of an age to remember mistrals daughter.

meowli · 20/08/2016 18:56

How about the name Maeve instead? (not mauve!)

GoldFishFingerz · 20/08/2016 19:36

Fern

ReggaeShark · 20/08/2016 19:45

Then you're saying it wrong, Wigglesrock.

wigglesrock · 20/08/2016 20:04

Wouldn't be the first time - I reckon I can cope, it's not a word I say often.
