Thoughts on the name Destiny? We really like it Smile

To be fair, I wouldn't use it, but that's because it sounds like something an African-American christian would be called. Which I am not.

But since you are, I say if you love it, go for it!

originalmavis · 10/08/2016 14:50

Wasn't there a character called 'Destiny Angel' in Thunderbirds (or was it Joe 90?).

There is lots of discrimination towards names from different backgrounds on mumsnet.

florascotianew · 10/08/2016 15:44

As previous posters have said, different countries have different naming traditions. 'Nelly' would not raise eyebrows in parts of Central Europe, for example, but might seem inadvisable to some people here in the UK.

There are lots of lovely virtue names - Faith, Hope, Clemency (I love that) have already been mentioned, but there is also Verity, Joy, Felicity, Charis (= Kindness), Mercy... plus Hannah (from the Bible, as I'm sure you know, and means Grace), Ruth (ditto, means Friend ) , Salome (ditto, from the word for Peace), Zarah (ditto, means Shining), Naomi (ditto, means Pleasant)... Also names such as Amanda (Loveable), Benedicta (Blessed)...

But if you like Destiny, then use it! It has an impressive, rather epic quality...

Iliveinalighthousewiththeghost · 10/08/2016 16:24

Chavvy. Sorry you did ask

FuzzyWizard · 10/08/2016 17:02

Vixxface- I agree. I teach in a very diverse school and the names of the teenagers I teach seem to be very unpopular on here. I don't think it's deliberate discrimination just a bit of solipsism and forgetting that not everyone is from the same background or place as us. Names like Destiny, Precious, Sandra, Tracy, Clare and Eunice all seem to provoke really negative reactions here but I know lots of awesome teenagers with names like that. They aren't children of chavvy, uneducated, underclass types Hmm. They just happen to not be white.

SirChenjin · 10/08/2016 17:06

When she has a baby it will be Destiny's Child Grin

I don't like it, but appreciate there are cultural differences.

MrsGsnow18 · 10/08/2016 20:02

OP if you love it then I wouldn't let anti rout you off it!
I don't see it as any different to names like Hope, Faith, Grace etc.

unicornthong · 12/08/2016 00:12

If you love it, use it - just don't expect everyone else to love it.

I personally think it's tacky...doesn't quite pass the High Court Judge test! Remember your tiny, new baby will be an adult one day and she'll still have that name...

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 12/08/2016 00:20

I think it's quite a lot to live up to! Or that's she's your destiny, which would maybe be a bit weird when/if you have other children...

I like the sound, but can't quite get past the meaning, sorry OP! I do like virtue names (I have a very soft spot for Verity), but Destiny just seems a name with a lot more pressure. Blessing is sort of a "this child is a blessing now" whereas Destiny seems more like "she'll do something brilliant in the future".

mathanxiety · 12/08/2016 06:18

I'm in the US and I would see it as a stripper name when used by caucasians and especially when spelled in an unusual way (Destinee, Destinye, Destynee, etc). When used by African Americans, it's something of a classic name. There are nuances in American naming trends that are not always apparent from across the pond - many names carry entirely different connotations when used in different settings within the US.

However, even given all of that, I don't think it's in the same category as names like Faith, Grace, Hope, or other virtues because it's not a virtue or an attribute or related to religion. It has an 'epic' quality to it as Florascotianew says, but that is a very worldly quality.

If you want a name along the lines of the three just mentioned, how about Joy? Or Serena? Or Letitia? (a name meaning joy/happiness)
Or Constance?

Vera means truth and also faith...
Honor and Justice are also nice names (imo).
Esme means 'loved' or 'held in high esteem'.

If you want a name with something of the same quality as Destiny, how about Stella, or Estella, or Estelle?

Or Esperanza, if Hope is already taken. Esperanza has a bit more oomph than Hope imo.

Similarly, if Constance as a virtue name appeals to you but you want to make it a bit more memorable, how about Constanza?

(I wouldn't use the name Serenity in the US - it's the name of an adult incontinence product).

BlueChampagne · 12/08/2016 14:33

I hear Darth Vader ... "Luke, it is your dessssstiny"

How about Mercy, Constance, Charis, or Felicity?

WanderingTrolley1 · 12/08/2016 14:40

Tacky name.

QueenZelda · 12/08/2016 18:30

Ignore other posters, they're in a white middle class bubble.

It's nice OP.

Destinysdaughter · 12/08/2016 18:34

Ooh I love it! 😀😀😀

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 12/08/2016 18:45

American D list celeb, sorry.

MrsHulk · 12/08/2016 19:26

I'm sorry, in the UK I think it would be seen as a very "chavvy" name (don't like that word but not sure how else to describe it!)

DerelictMyBalls · 12/08/2016 20:03

I absolutely love Destiny.

ScarletWings · 13/08/2016 11:18

I like it... I think it's pretty Smile

maggiethemagpie · 13/08/2016 22:45

I don't like it -even taking into account the fact that you are african american. Honor on the other hand is lovely name. For god's sake don't go for Charis as a poster upthread mentioned - it's a type of marijuana!

Wannabe2015 · 14/08/2016 16:04

God, there are some stuck up replies to this...heaven forbid anyone name their child something that doesn't belong in the 'aspirational white middle class' club.

Destiny is pretty and meaningful. A lovely choice.

originalmavis · 14/08/2016 16:09

I'd rather hear it on here first that a chosen baby name would be sniggered at or generally thought to be common/stuck up/weird/whatever in the real world than find out later.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 14/08/2016 16:11

Err,the OP asked for opinions they weren't offered unsolicited!

villainousbroodmare · 14/08/2016 16:51

Some people will think that it's tacky.
