Husband is suggesting this name for our son. Just after some opinions and curious as to how people would think this was pronounced and if there would be pronunciation issues? Thanks.

Is it pronounced Shown? Where is it from?

LunaLoveg00d · 08/08/2016 19:45

I know a Sion who was Welsh and pronounced it as the standard Sean. Never heard Seon and my Spanish speaking brain would click in and pronounce it say-ON.

justpeachy74 · 08/08/2016 19:48

I'm not Spanish but I would think it was pronounced Say-on.

LapinR0se · 08/08/2016 19:53

I would think, oh that person has made a typo and correct it to Seán

Floggingmolly · 08/08/2016 19:58

It actually is a little known variant of Seán; but it's bloody awful Hmm

daisydalrymple · 08/08/2016 19:58

I would guess same as sion / Shaun / Sean too.

sleepyhead · 08/08/2016 20:00

Looks like the girl's name Seona (Shona) with the a left off. So I would assume it was pronounced Shown (to rhyme with own not frown), as opposed to Sean.

LapinR0se · 08/08/2016 20:01

Google can't even find it...

Madbengalmum · 08/08/2016 20:17

Dont like, sorry

sonlypuppyfat · 08/08/2016 20:21

What's that now?

HoratioNightboy · 08/08/2016 20:27

I'd think you were confused between the Irish and the Gaelic versions of John - Seán is Irish and Seòn is Gaelic, although the Gaelic form is barely known, even in Scotland. Pronounced the same as Seán.

But if that wasn't what you meant then I'd have no idea.

MamMamMam · 08/08/2016 20:33

Seàn is irish for John. Pronounced Shawn. Ive never heard of seòn, but assume its along similar lines. As a side note seàn in a lovely nameGrin

MrsGsnow18 · 08/08/2016 21:36

I wouldn't be sure on how to pronounce by just reading it. I'd prob try Shown? Or just like Sean.
It looks nice on paper though, once people got used to it was pronounced it wouldn't be an issue.

BackforGood · 08/08/2016 21:50

I'd cautiously sound out 'Sea-on' with a sort of question mark in my voice tone Grin
I'd also wonder if it were a typo for Sean.

Aftershock15 · 08/08/2016 22:34

I would think sea-on (like the fiat but an s) but if I saw it written down would also assume it was a girls name.

MrsJoeyMaynard · 08/08/2016 23:21

No idea, but if I had to guess, I'd try see-awn.

villainousbroodmare · 08/08/2016 23:23

Shay-OWN?

Mouse510 · 09/08/2016 16:43

Shona in gaelic is Seonaid. So it is similar but with the accent on the 'O'. Not sure what the pronunciation would be. Would you be condemning your DS to a lifetime of spelling his name? (I really like Rhuairidh for a boy which would have the same effect though!)
