Choosing a name is impossible!!! We are a bi-national family so finding one that works in both countries makes it even harder!

Here are favourites so far. We would appreciate opinions on any of these, and ideas of similar names would be really great!!

Noah
Dylan (can't actually use)
Cassius
Nolan
Dorian
Elijah
Ezra (can't actually use)
Isaiah
Casey
Owen
Lazarus
Dexter

(some I've put "can't use" cos they don't work in both countries but left them on the list so you can have an idea of what kind of names we like)

which countries?

Best of those is Noah

What about Isaac and Elias also.

What countries do they need to work for

dontmakemedothis · 27/07/2016 01:38

Portugal and England.

Isaac I like in English but is horrible in Portuguese. Elias has been turned down already.

Why doesn't Dylan and Ezra work in Portuguese?

dontmakemedothis · 27/07/2016 01:42

Different D sound and the r after the z is unheard of and difficult to say.

Cassius, Lazarus and Dexter are great!

Noah might sound feminine on the continent.

Owen would get my vote, it was always my favourite boy's name, with Keir being in second place. My Dh wasn't keen on either so our son is called Ben.

W is the problem in Brazil, not sure what they're like in Portugal but here both names are often used and as W is unused or interchangeable with V he has been referred to as xxxxx Oven

dizzyfucker, do you think people would struggle to pronounce Ezra there?

Unfortunately we both hate all Portuguese boys' names, haha.

Not really but I would really avoid a boys name that ended in an a. It could be a problem for a boy. Do you like Lucas, Luis or Jonathan? Those all work brilliantly and are not classically Portuguese. Noah is Noé so could be complicated. I think Cassius is your best choice and it's a lovely name

Cassius and Elijah are my favourites. Cassius Elijah would be a great name Smile

Just had a thought, if you like Ezra could you work with Ezras as a formal name? That eliminates the a ending.

Sorry I am taking over your thread but I love names, I like Portuguese names but they are hard to work with. I didn't used to like them but since living here they have grown on me. My first choice if I had another boy would be Davi despite the fact that there are 4 in my youngest sons class of 8 boys!

dizzyfucker I asked a lot of people here about Noah and Ezra and they weren't bothered about the name ending in A for a boy at all tbh. The problem with Ezra was the R after the Z, which they couldn't pronounce. Some of them just looked at the name and stared blankly like "wtf"? (so annoying)

albertcampionscat I don't really get your point? In the bible Lazarus was raised from the dead? I'm not really bothered about stories behind names anyway but even if I was, I don't see a big problem with that one!

marblestatue and others I LOVE Cassius too. On paper, I think it's a great name and perfect in both languages, and I love Cass as a nickname. But I just can't imagine using it and saying it for my son. Is that weird? Like, I practice saying "hey cassius, how was school?" and something just doesn't feel right.
