Harrison or Charlie?

Expecting our first baby in November, found out recently it's a boy so that's helpfully narrowed down the name search.

DH and I both like Harrison and Charlie, and are yet to find any other names we both agree on. Our thoughts on each:

Harrison

  • bit unusual without being "out there"
  • could shorten to Harry if we/he wanted
  • potentially a bit posh...? Maybe my imagination.

Charlie

  • is it a bit overused? Does it matter if there end up being 3 Charlies in his class at school?
  • would be Charles on birth certificate. We'd use Charlie most of the time, but we'd/he'd have the option of a more "serious" name when needed.

We think both names go well with the middle name we've chosen (Arthur) and sound "right" with our surname. Neither of them spell anything weird/rude as initials! Also they are both (hopefully) easy/obvious spellings - I have spent my life with an awkwardly spelled first name, so don't want to inflict that on my child if I can avoid it.

Would be great to get opinions on both please! Smile

Charlie. But just Charlie. No Charles.

Harry rather than Harrison.

LemonShizzleCake · 21/07/2016 15:45

Ooh a good mix of opinions! Not sure why I think Harrison could be construed as posh...maybe because I have only ever met one Harrison before, whose family were very firmly upper-middle class.

Will keep mulling it over. Naming an actual human comes with so much pressure attached...!

Also not offended by those who think Harrison is a bit chavvy - the reason I asked was to get a broad sweep of opinions, so
I'm glad you're honest! Grin

I'm in London and I don't think Harrison is posh or chavvy. It's a relatively normal name around these parts. I don't think it's particularly out there either, it's definitely gaining popularity so won't be seen as unusual

It's a nice name, go for it. Charlie is fine too

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 21/07/2016 17:43

Charlie.

Dislike Harrison. It's definitely not at all posh, reverse if anything. (Obviously Harry can be posh though)

Bluesand1 · 21/07/2016 18:26

No of more Charlies than Harrisons
I know 1 Harrison whose mum is a lawyer. Lots of names are referred to as down market on here unless a select few

Know*

wobblywonderwoman · 21/07/2016 19:37

Could you go for Henry ? I don't like Harrison and love Charlie but its very popular

Wishfulmakeupping · 21/07/2016 19:44

Harrison is not posh it's not chavvy either though just a 'normal' name like Joshua, Oliver etc
I prefer Charles with Charlie as nn though or Harry over Harrison (And Henry more than all the above!)

Iwasbornin1993 · 21/07/2016 19:51

I really like both! If I had to choose I'd probably go for Harrison though

DoctorTwo · 21/07/2016 20:08

I thought this was going to be a stealth Archers thread! :o Harrison Burns and Charlie Thomas. Sorry, I'll go away now...

Charles/Charlie

septembersunshine · 21/07/2016 20:34

I don't like Harrison but really like Harry. Bit like not liking Jackson but liking Jack. I would go with Harry or Henry (although I know that's not an option). The other thing with Harrison is I just think it sounds like a really boring surname. So that would personally put me off.

Charlie is a weird one for me. It sounds so casual and I can't imagine an adult Charlie. What would he be like? Kind of cheeky but a bit like a grown up kid? I don't know. But then I really dislike Charles.

Pinklily1 · 21/07/2016 21:03

Also agree Harrison isn't posh. It's very popular here as well.

I'd personally go with Arthur Charlie. I know you said Arthur is the planned middle name but I love it! Or Harry Arthur.

BikeRunSki · 21/07/2016 21:05

I prefer Harrison, but it is neither posh or unusual.

We have a Charlie which I adore but I know of a little one named Harrison Arthur and he is one of the sweetest children I have ever met.

SteviebunsBottrittrundle · 22/07/2016 20:53

Arthur Charles is so lovely! Sorry OP, I know that's not helpful as you wanted it as a middle name. but I think I'm in luff with it.

Rickstone · 22/07/2016 21:48

Charlie
